AIBU I am fuming, grand daughter was told off by her teacher and called racist, she is only 8. A child in her class siad her new hair style was horrible and made her look poor, she retaliated by saying at least I am not Russian. (the other child is Russian) She was punished by her teacher and marked as racist in some "bad mark book" The other child was not punished. She then cried and when her friends tried to comfort her they were also punished. She is good at school, works hard and is frequently praised for her kindness to others. This new teacher has overstepped the mark IMHO..

She called out soneone’s ethnicity in a negative way. That is racist.

She might not realise of course, it may not have been vindictive, but she certainly needs to be told .

She did make a racist comment. Valuable lesson learned.

Would you really expect nothing to be said to her by the teacher?

Report
Lndnmummy · 17/11/2018 17:21

Of course she needs to be told that the remark was out of order Hmm

But that is racist. She might not have realised it, but it is. And now she knows.

How would you describe “at least I’m not Russian”.

How does she know how to use someone’s ethnicity as an insult? I would be very concerned as to where she was learning that behaviour.

Teacher was perfectly reasonable.

That was a very unpleasant remark she made. Children trade insults, but racist remarks are just not acceptable and she needs to learn that.

What the other girl said was definitely more spiteful, so she should have been punished too.

What punishment did the other girl receive for making fun of your granddaughter's perceived economic status and her appearance?
I won't hold my breath!

It’s not racist it’s Xenophobic. But yeah still not nice. The other girl should have been punished too.

And schools do have a legal requirement to record such incidents, so yes, will be written in a book.

YABU
Kids get told off and learn how to handle themselves in life. Not just the life parents provide but the full colour show of life, warts and all. If that stops her making any racist comments in the future that would be great of the teacher, wouldn't it?
Does anyone ever think what sort of adult the kid would turn into with out good teachers like this.

I don’t think I understand. What do you think a reasonable response from the teacher would have been? You must know that what your granddaughter said was totally unacceptable?

The other girl should have been punished too of course.

They both should have been punished but she was in the wrong and the comment was racist.

@StayPuft a one off comment isn't bullying

The incident has to be recorded and the number of incidents at the school reported to the LEA. It's a statutory requirement - the teacher had no choice.

Ghanagirl · 17/11/2018 17:27

OP it’s unusual for a child of 8 to make such a comment without knowing it’s racist even if she hears this at home by that age it would have been covered extensively at school.
You should support the teacher, what if all the girls who witnessed it then said the same thing.

They are never one off comments though are they?

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/11/2018 17:28

If someone had said that to my half Russian children I’d want them punished.

If someone starts insulting someone and making assumptions about their heritage and background they are inviting a retort or similar vein back.

Doesn't make either right but imo it doesn't make one more culpable than the other.

A teen who is white British but was born and raised for formative years abroad was told by a black kid in school to go back to where they came from. Kid replied "I could say the same to you".

Guess which one was excluded?

Worlds gone a little PC mad at times and ignores the context

You’re creating a situation on assumptions from the OP. Not helpful.

"At least Im not Russian"

What's wrong with being Russian OP? Where do you think your granddaughter has got the idea that there is something wrong with it?

Report
cc4490 · 17/11/2018 17:30

I think your grand daughter needed to be told off for her comment because it was wrong but I also think the other girl should have been told off too as she was obviously being nasty.

Report
youarenotkiddingme · 17/11/2018 17:30

Notum would you also expect your children to be equally punished for starting it with unkind derogatory comments about social class?
