AIBU?

MIL woes

MIL is 70. She is staying with us until Next Thursday.
We work and won't be in during the day & MlL is planning to go into town shopping when we are at work.
We have given her a key and she can't lick the door. Seriously.
The lock is not stiff, you simply pull the handle up and lock it with a key from the outside. The lock on her door is a Yale - no pulling up handles.
She can't do it and has said that if she can't do it tomorrow she will just leave it unlocked when she goes out as it will be ok for a couple of hours until she gets back.

WTAF???

AIBU to think WTAF????? Am I???

I have gone to bed. I'm fucking annoyed.

Just tell her not to go out without locking it first. If you don't trust her then take the key away.

I'm more annoyed with DH who hasn't said a word. He told me to 'leave it'. Angry

Well, if she plans to replace all your stolen stuff when the house insurance won't pay out due to an unlocked door, that's fine.

Have you stood her outside the door and made her do it?

If I take the key away, she will go out anyway. She does what she likes.

lock her in by mistake, she won't be able to get out then

Unless dh comes to rescue her, cos of course your phone will be set mysteriously to silent.

Yes, we did a practice run. She couldn't do it 4/5 times. She managed it once. She says if she can't do it tomorrow she will just leave it.

Tell her to go out when you leave? (So you lock the door?)
Stand outside with her til she’s figured it out?
Hope she replaces your stolen stuff?

Has she actually said this in front of your DH?

Report
magpiemay · 03/12/2017 20:52

Make it very clear that if she cannot lock the door she must not leave! Seriously put your foot down.... and if DH won’t support you... LTB!

Report
InspMorse · 03/12/2017 20:52

I wish we had neighbours that could help. They leave for work when we leave orbefore sometimes.
Yes, DH was there throughout the conversation.

Do a 1960s seaside B&B landlady trick - kick her out after breakfast then don't let her back in until you're back in the evening. (Not seriously). She probably isn't being deliberately awkward, hands get a lot less strong when you get older.

Report
InspMorse · 03/12/2017 20:53

I just give up.
She's so stubborn. She thinks it will be ok so it will be ok.

No she's not being deliberately awkward but still. I want to kill DH for not taking the week off work.

Totally not on. DH has to then stay off work so the house is not left unsupervised.
