So I've started up a cake business and I'm struggling with pricing. There is quite a lot of competition in my area so want to price competitively but also want to make a profit! Some of the people I've quoted have been fine with my prices, others have scoffed and said far too expensive. I've attached a picture. Can you tell me how much you would expect to pay? I won't tell you how much I would charge to influence you

Cakes like that go for about £100-£125 here in London. On these threads price does seem to vary quite widely from region to region.

My friend is a professional cake maker, and for that, she would probably charge around £50

I'd expect to pay around £60- £70. Ingredients would cost a fair amount- sugar paste ain't that cheap- and the time to bake, make buttercream, crumb coat and then cover and decorate would amount to something like 3- 4 hours. So, if ingredients were around £15-20 and time at £10 per hour plus a bit of profit = £60 and up.

You have to work out what it costs you to make in energy, materials and labour and then work out a profit margin. As you gain experience you will get quicker and more proficient. There is no point in charging less if you end up making a loss.

I make cakes badly and while that looks simple, to get it so manicured is tricky! I'd say between £40 or £50.
