I'm at dm's with dc. DM had a man come to cut the grass and dc were on the step watching him. When he finished, he had a little chat with them (and DM)
He asked their age and remarked that ds2 is big for his age (true)
DM said yes, and they're like chalk and cheese aren't they (also true)
He said what? They're brothers?
DM laughed and said yes.
what, like proper brothers or is one the milkman's?

Shock

DM seems to think it wasn't rude and just an observation. I think it's a horrible comment. Aibu?

It's just a joke, emphasising how different they are.

YABU. Just a throwaway lighthearted comment.

No, that is bloody rude. A joke it may be, but one that operates on calling into question a woman's sexual fidelity (lighthearted or not) is not on.

Yes it's a well-worn traditional joke, to be used in these circumstances. Does anyone else remember the vosene advert with the family with one red haired child and a red haired milkman? Or am I really old?

It's a joke as old as the hills. My sister and I are totally different and I look nothing like the others in my family. Used to be an ongoing joke. Nobody thought it was offensive.

YABU, as others said, it's a very old joke.

It's a joke, just not a very funny one. I get asked it all the time as myself and exDP have blue eyes same as DC2, but DC1 has brown eyes!

It's a joke, but it's a bit of a tactless one to be cracking these days, when lots of families are blended, and might have different fathers!

YABU - its just a joke !

I've used it about myself, my children all look very like my DH, and if anyone comments, I have said 'You can certainly tell they're not the milkman's"

I think you being a touch oversensitive, and it's definitely not offensive.

I use this joke myself, my husband, myself and our daughter all have dark brown hair and brown or greeny brown eyes. Our son is blond haired and blue eyed Grin

It's honestly not meant nastily, I'd hardly be calling my own fidelity into question!

It's just a joke but your mum should have played along and said "yes actually you're right - it's our dark family secret." And pretended to cry. Grin

That one is as old as the hills and almost guaranteed to be trotted out in the conversation you describe. It's tired, unoriginal and nothing to be offended about at all.

Yes its rude and a sign of his ignorance. Brothers dont even have to be blood relate to be brothers FFS! Who questions a child's parentage right there in front of them? Especially someone who it has fuck all to do with.

YABU. I don't think it has anything to do with a woman sleeping around haha just that they are so different! We say my brother is the milk man's because he is normal unlike the rest of us ;)

It's a very old joke. I can't believe anyone would take offence (unless, of course, they had been having it away with the milkman).

CaTsMaMmA · 14/05/2015 12:39

is it specifically milk men you find offensive? Or all delivery type employees?

Report
BitOutOfPractice · 14/05/2015 12:39

It's just a throwaway comment. Lighthearted.

YABU
