to not understand zoella and the popularity of a video showing how to ice digestives

Quick & Easy DIY Christmas Treats | Zoella:

I'm probably just old, but seriously are teenagers these days so useless at cooking that a video of putting icing on a digestive and snapping a candy Kane in half then filling with chocolate is informative?

These bloggers are the new gods amongst teens and pre teens. My dd and her friends are totally obsessed with them, all of them (there's about 6 of them all friends / boyfriends etc that do it). They can do no wrong. If they made a video about how to wipe your bum they'd all be watching it. It's weird.

I think Zoella could make a video on how to pick a nose and the teenagers would still flock to it. I asked DD (15) to explain the attraction of Zoella, whom she follows avidly, and she struggled...

I guess it's a generational thing. Or summat.

My 13 year old is obsessed with her. I find it a bit odd, but have come to the conclusion that there is worse stuff she could be doing.

Different people like different things.

Isn't it lovely that we now have the internet, and LOADS of TV channels, so that people can have a variety of things to watch? In my day everyone had to watch the same things, even when they didn't really like it, because that was all there was.

christ I would want to KILL her if I knew her, and her annoying perky perkiness

Yeah, but most of it is utter crap Trills - we're raising a generation of children and young people whose heads are filled with marshmallow

Its nothing to do with cooking skills, I don't think any teen is watching her for culinary advice. Surely the views on this video are a result of the subscribers anyway? I imagine if this was her first video or reflective of all other videos then no she wouldn't be as popular.

My understanding of the top vloggers/youtube stars, is that by creating these videos and documenting their lives, their audience and subscribers are semi-invested in them. They seem to feel as if they know them and are maybe eve friends.

I do it myself and I don't even watch that regularly. Just by watching Lisa Eldridge videos I will find myself wondering her opinion on something or wondering if she is aware of a certain product then I have to remember I don't know her. I always thought the reason tv and video was so captivating was because it feels like you're part of the conversation and with these vloggers I think most forget it isn't just them being spoken to.

There's a group of prolific youtubers who command a massive following, she's one of them.

She's harmless and seems a good egg, she's not smoking crack or knocking back the Jack Daniels, at least not on the channel.

She's harmless and seems a good egg

That's a fair point actually. When I think what I was doing at 15 compared to DD and her Zoella fixation I should probably not say too much Blush

dd met Zoella recently - slightly fluffy, but as others say she's relatively harmless and appears as a 'friend' - not pushy and demanding, just being along side her generation. There's much scarier stuff for young teens to be getting into than the big Zee.

I was trying to take the high ground.

She's all cute and perky and I want to strangle her and put her in a mass grave with Zooey Deschanel.

I guess we'd need a few more quirky kooky big-eyed harmless cute people to make it a proper mass grave, but I'm sure we could find some.

If there's one who is slightly annoying it's Jonathan Saccone Joly, him and his Wife blog 20 minutes a day of their life with their two (absolute gorgeous) children.

Don't ask me how I know these things.

Damn, I was seriously in awe of your grown up reasonableness there Trills

Who was the blogger who was torn to pieces (rightly so, imo) recently on here for her Boden blog? She was another Zoooooeeeeeey lookalike, all bearded boyfriend, home made cakes and no discernible talents or skills to speak of, other than parents who obviously knew Johnny. Is there a breeding ground for these women somewhere??

I loved the Boden blogger and her boyfriend with the Oscar the Grouch eyebrows. Cos all teenagers have impromptu Parisian picnics in a flower market with a photographer at hand, or some such bollocks.

I believe the young people watch Youtube like us oldies watch TV. She and her people are the 'TV stars' of the day.

Seriously, I admire her. I believe she started from her bedroom (ie didn't have a machine behind her, which she probably has now as she is extending her brand to a book etc).

She also talked about her anxiety in her vlogs, which I think is brave and helpful. To some young people she is probably more relevant and accessible than a booklet/lesson on mental health issues.

She has recently been signed up as a spokesperson for MIND, the mental health charity.
