I've just read the article and watched the video - I cannot believe his behavior.

I'm not someone who hates police - I've only ever encountered one bad apple and I've had regular dealings with very nice police officers that took their jobs and responsibilities seriously.

This guy needs a good talking to.

what an arsehole, and I don't often swear! people like him give the police a bad name. the vast majority of police officers are in the job for all the right reasons, but inevitably there are a few rotten apples attracted by the lust for power and status. he needs stamping on from a great height.

Wow, I don't see how he can keep his job really, it was a blatant attempt to bully and set up the victim, and there were several other officers guilty of the same. Let us hope they are all kicked off the force pdq!

As an ex police staffer I had good contacts with professional standards (The police ,police), I can assure you a significant number of officers are lying ,violent, thugs who should not be let out with a water pistol. Let alone a warrant card.

It's scary how one officer can lie and then they all just follow on based on that. No one else tried to confirm that he had been driving or that they could smell alcohol on his breath. And by the end of the video it had gone from him possibly having driven because his car was nearby to him supposedly having been seen driving that morning. I'm not sure all the police officers were deliberately lying or supporting a lie, they were just following instructions from the original one who had made up the story. I couldn't see in the video that they had all heard the original interaction.

It's also a bit that someone can be arrested for drink driving away from their vehicle, when only suspected of having driven earlier in the day. Even if he had driven and did test positive for alcohol, he could have had the drink since he had arrived.

Police officers like this need to be properly and publicly held accountable for their actions. Great Manchester Police ought to be saying how ashamed they are rather than trying to cover everyone's arses.

There's a lot of these sorts of videos on YouTube. Police officers lying, bullying, etc. I do believe its a minority of police however there's too many.

There's a really nasty one from London where a French art student is beaten up and arrested for taking photos of London office blocks. Will try and find it.

the problem with this is that you cant see if indeed this man had been driving or if he had had a drink.

the original officer states he can smell alcohol on his breath - how can anyone say whether he could or not?

If it turns out that he was just making something up to get rid of him filming then its disgraceful and he will be dealt with by professional standards - but the fact is that an officer only has to suspect an offence to detain....

did the gent arrive in a car? had he been drinking? he said not - but how do you know that? because, with respect - the majority of people who do get caught drink driving all say they havent had a drink, or havent been driving, so while its very easy to accuse the officer of wrong doing its just as easy to accuse the gent similarly. Also the gentleman says he is not a protester....but just goes to film it?

i personally would never mind anyone filming what i do because i have absolutely nothing to hide.

i arrested someone on xmas day - abandoned a bloody great big wagon in someones front garden and ran for it....10 mins later saunters up and says his truck was stolen.....despite witnesses to the contrary.
people do lie. sadly. He could have killed someone. He had already driven the truck up the pavement and into a garden....even so because the witnesses wouldnt give evidence the likelyhood is he will walk free due to lack of evidence - that doesnt mean that my evidence was made up!
i would hope very much that officers do not lie - certainly no one i work alongside would and ive never witnessed any officer lie when i have been working. If i arent happy with something i dont do it. Ive had occasion where ive had to say no to colleagues and do things my own way.

see what the enquiry finds before making judgement on either the officers or the gent they arrested.

I agree with VicarInTutu that we need to be equally open to scrutinising both versions here.

And for the record, I have witnessed officers telling fibs, or at least trying to encourage the witness at a crime scene (=me) to tell fibs in order to incriminate a known witness: this included giving me details of the suspect's criminal record which I am sure I should not have had at that point.

That doesn't tell us anything about what has been going on in this particular case.
