AIBU?

To think Stephen Fry is NOT a national treasure

Just listening to his English Delight on Radio4. Dire.

I've never understood all the adulation around him. He is accomplished, well-spoken, prolific. But so are many other actors and authors.

His TV documentaries, especially are really meh.. Dont get me wrong, they are very well made (the one where he travels America, another one on languages), but what exactly is the Stephen Fry touch? Any other knowledgeable presenter could fill his shoes and no one would know the difference...Only liked him as Melchett. Lost all respect for him when he started wittering away posting on Twitter, to be honest.

YAB unspeakably U! Of course there are other people who could do some of what he does - if you extend that dubious logic perhaps we only need one presenter/entertainer/commentator for everything? Stephen is utterly marvellous and that is the end of the matter.

Next?

I absolutely adore the man. Love love love.

You are clearly deluded. OK?

He was tolerable until he murdered the 'last chance to see' series done by Douglas Adams.

I won't forgive him...

Stephen Fry is my ultimate dinner party guest. He has an encycopaedic knowledge; I could just sit and listen to him for hours on any subject, he has one of those voices you immediately attune to and are enraptured.

YANBU. He's sweet but overrated. And I agree, I liked him more as Melchett than anything else.

yanbu!!!! I totally agree with you, Steven Fry is well overrated

Lottapianos · 04/09/2012 21:41

Was it Julie Burchill who described him as 'a stupid person's idea of what a clever person would be'?

YANBU - totally agree Op with you & Lotta.

YANBU at all.

A pompous, ever so slightly sexist arse.

How very dare you! I luffs Steven Fry. He drives a Taxi, is well-educated, swears beautifully, is knowledgeable, honest, and likes sweets. You leave him alone!

Lotta Well Julie Burchill is cheap. She hits low despite her intelligence.

YANBU, I really can't stand him.

he is overrated and irritating but I feel defensive because I have (impulsively) licked the inside of his ear before

also have lots in common with him like where we come from in Norfolk, getting expelled, being sent to Norfolk college of arts and technology, pretending to have a severe mental disorder etc

YANBU. Awfully smug and believes his own hype. The Julie Birchill quote is spot on.

Not a Julie Burchill fan but there is something about that quote that I like Smile

In 2010, Burchill wrote of her parents: "I don't care much for families. I adored my mum and dad, but to be honest I don't miss them much now they're dead."

Another dysfunctional creature with the inability to form lasting relationships. Hmm I wonder, does she post here?

Yabu - it's not about his accomplishments any more, or the originality of his work, we all just like him.

You don't have to.

For example, I have a strong aversion to Barbara Windsor - our little cockney sparra!
