Giving up milk.....how did you do it?

I have always drank lots of milk in lots of mugs of tea and coffee throughout the day. I know it's not good for me but lockdown has lead to an increase in quantity.

For those of you who've given up, how did you manage? Do you drink substitutes? I like almond milk, but not as much and it's not great for the environment.

I like peppermint tea but all the fruit one's taste the same. Any recommendations for alternatives?

My DD gave up dairy due to allergies.
She likes the blue Oatly that you find in the fridge, not the one on the shelf.

MAilk is underrated.
Calcium is really good for you, milk is also a good sauce of protein and lots of other good stuff. Keep the milk!

Milk is one of the reasons why the Dutch tend to be very tall so there must be alot of good in it.

I use Alpro unsweetened soya milk. It is long life and has added calcium and vitamins. Have used it for years. Somebsoya milks are awful and have oils etc added to them but not the Alpro. The fresh one has sweeteners so I stick to the Alpro.

I think the amount of coffee and tea you are drinking is likely to be more harmful than milk. Why not cut down on the number if those you drink and switch to water or hot water and a slice of lemon if you want a hot drink.

I drink very little milk - almond milk in a coffee at breakfast time. I then drink black coffee. I cut down on my caffeine intake recently and in the afternoons have redbush tea with a little cow's milk. My original reason for cutting down milk was due to the sugars in it and the calories. I do eat a lot of zero fat Greek yoghurt though so I'm getting enough calcium. We have a family member with CMPA and there are lots of other sources of calcium, including fortified plant milks.

Why do you think milk is bad for you? Do you have a proven reaction / allergy? If you do fair enough to stop but otherwise ...

Milk is a good source of calcium, iodine and vitamins - keep drinking it !

Honestly, I had to use Lent to give dairy milk up, it was based on my empathy for lactating cows. Of the six weeks, the first two were really hard for me. I tried all the milk substitutes I could find - oat, rice, coconut, hazelnut, almond, soya - and experimented in using them. So, now I use hazelnut for breakfast cereals and porridge (tastes almost chocolatey) and I love coconut in tea. Anything is good in coffee!

My friend swears by rice milk in tea as the one most similar to cow's milk.. but I've changed my tastebuds and cow's milk now feels too heavy for me and I don't care for the taste! During Lent, I was very strict and had none whatsoever, but now I'll take a tea with dairy milk if it's offered.. but I prefer not to. Also, Costa do lovely lattes - coconut/vanilla and hazelnut/almond - that's good encouragement for me!

Additional: I used to use a lot of milk in my tea - 100ml or so, which would add up to 50 calories per cup. If I had eight cups a day, that's an easy 400 calories. Coconut milk is 20 calories per 100ml so it all adds up (8 cups would be 160 calories) and I feel loads lighter and healthier.

I don't take milk, I mostly drink redbush due to caffeine sensitivity but I drink ordinary tea black too. Plenty of people do, personal preference

Why is it not good for you? If it's just tea and coffee milk I doubt you are being excessive anyway.

I switched to oatly semi for my coffee as I love the taste of it and I use unsweetened soy for tea

It's like anything tho isn't it you just need to get used to a different taste my sister on the other hand isn't into sub milk so she just drinks black tea and coffee now

When I dropped milk I bought alot of subs and tried them all to make sure the whole family liked what we were changing to

Soy is also great for cooking and baking with

I don't think anyone is saying we need milk. Just asking why OP thinks it is bad for you.

Oatly barrista is great in coffee.

I'm not convinced milk is really bad for you though.

I adore milk but I did give it up for a few weeks when I was breast feeding as wanted to rule it out as a contributing factor to baby’s breastfeeding. The brand Mylk, which you can buy in the refrigerator section of a lot of supermarkets, was a great substitute. It was a mix of coconut, rice and a few other ingredients (nothing scary or chemically sounding though!) that was designed to taste and feel as much like cow’s milk as possible. I actually preferred it on my cornflakes and it was great for baking with. Comes in full cream and semi skimmed too, so you have more choice about how rich you want it to be.

Duh. Contributing factor to baby’s eczema while I was breastfeeding. Face palm.

We switched from whole milk to 2% without any problems. I can’t drink less than that though.

I gave it up cold turkey once I discovered my breastfed baby had a cows milk allergy Sad
Oatly barista is absolutely spot on for tea 👌 I've road tested many alternatives, and this is absolutely the best for tea. For coffee, I'll happily have any really, but tea can't be wrong Grin, it's a major food group for me.

I can honestly say I don't miss 'proper' milk in drinks and think I'll probably stick with the oatly when I'm done breastfeeding.
