Is it normal to buy a coffee every day?

DD is 14 and loves watching 'a day in my life' Tiktoks and Youtubers.

We have a regular debate over how aspirational their lives are. DD seems genuinely convinced that it is totally normally to buy an iced latte every day. Whereas I am huffing and puffing about how much that costs over a month Grin

I work in a coffee shop, and yes it’s normal! Thankfully, or I’d be out of a job.

Howshouldibehave · 30/06/2021 22:00

It’s not normal for anyone I know, I have to say!

We both drink coffee, but make it at home/work!

DelineCion · 30/06/2021 22:01

I used to buy a coffee a day when I worked in the city. I could afford it then. These days it's just a treat! I don't know how teens are always showing their frappuchinos on TikTok- bank of mum and dad.

There was a time in my life when it was pretty normal (late 20s, no kids, good disposable income). Now it's more like once a week in normal times (still wfh so currently much less often).

flippertygibbit · 30/06/2021 22:02

I buy one from the cafe at work every day, it's a nice treat (plus my minor contribution keeps someone in a job).

Mrbob · 30/06/2021 22:03

For me and most of my friends yes. In Australia tho which may have a slightly different coffee ethos

LawnFever · 30/06/2021 22:03

I don’t personally, when I was travelling by train quite a bit for work I’d usually get a coffee for the journey, but not something I’ve ever done every day

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/06/2021 22:03

Seems to be but it’s bloody expensive.

00100001 · 30/06/2021 22:04

It's not unusual.

Allthegranola · 30/06/2021 22:04

Not every day for anyone I know. We all make our coffee at home/at work. It's a treat for us maybe once a week or fortnight if we meet up we will sit in or get takeaway.

If I had the disposable income I totally would though!

Just10moreminutesplease · 30/06/2021 22:04

When I worked in a city centre office I bought a coffee every morning. Now I work from home I make do without (it’s the only thing I actually miss!).

Attictroll · 30/06/2021 22:04

Definitely when I was younger pre family - before work and to some extent post kids just to get me through the morning.

roses2 · 30/06/2021 22:04

It was normal where I worked in Central London pre covid. That plus a take away lunch too. My colleagues thought nothing of spending £10/day on lunch and coffee.

I used to bring my own lunch in and stick to office provided tea.

Not sure if it's a generation thing. I'm in my early 40s and colleagues in 20s/early 30s.

Pigeonorcoot · 30/06/2021 22:05

Pre covid yes totally normal for me (but I agree, a complete waste of money).

Mayaspecialist · 30/06/2021 22:05

Depends. Some people will. Some people won't.

I try not to, unless it an independent place. They are cheaper and I would rather support them.

I rarely pass an independent one though.

GirlAloud · 30/06/2021 22:06

I’m ancient enough to remember life before CostaBucks, so no, buying a coffee every day isn’t normal for me. It’s an occasional treat. I have better things to do with that £100 per month / £1200 per year than spend it on coffee.

KarenofSparta · 30/06/2021 22:06

Maybe not for 14 year olds 🤷🏻‍♀️
HalzTangz · 30/06/2021 22:06

I buy coffee every day, it's my little vice. But I get nectar points and Costa points (use Costa points for free drinks) and use nectar points when I double up Sainsbury's points at christmas

BrilliantBetty · 30/06/2021 22:06

I shouldn't but I often do. Probably 4 or 5 out of 7 days.

nimbuscloud · 30/06/2021 22:06

There is a fantastic independent cafe on my way to work. I get a coffee every day there.

RubyFowler · 30/06/2021 22:06

I think its normal for a lot of people yes. I can't afford it though.

redferrari · 30/06/2021 22:07

I used to while working in the city and office vending machine one was really bad. But have had comments from others who would rather buy a drink than a coffee. But I wasn't much of a drinker and used to prefer to spend on a decent cup of coffee to get me through the day. Luckily I changed jobs and the new office had Nespresso machines which saved me a lot of money.

AlGorithim · 30/06/2021 22:08

No, it isn’t.

Mintjulia · 30/06/2021 22:08

No, it isn't. I've just started a new job in WC2. My two colleagues are a male graduate aged 27 and a female graduate aged 23. We all work for a tech co. that pays significantly more than the living wage.

The office managers provide free milk and a dispensing machine for nespresso pods at 80p each, and I noticed both my colleagues were only drinking water regardless of how cold it was.

I brought a catering jar of Dowe Egberts into the office and left it there. Problem solved.

An iced latte would cost at least £2.50 a day, or £52 pounds a month after tax. That's £650 of annual salary wasted on posh coffee.

MatchingStraws · 30/06/2021 22:08

It's older teens/ twenty somethings in the videos. She gets a frappucino once a week and takes pictures at all different angles to repost daily Grin

I just can't get over the money.
