Dessert/pudding on Cristmas Day that's not Christmas Pudding

What do people do if they don't do Christmas Pudding or trifle?

We very rarely make any pudding/dessert at all. We haven't hosted Christmas for a long time but will be this year. Don't think a banana and a frozen tube of yoghurt is appropriate.

Any ideas?

We're competent in the kitchen. There will be 5 people eating, including MIL and FIL who do not have adventurous tastes.

I do creme brulee. It's not something we would normally have and everyone loves it.

A firm favourite is hot chocolate fudge cake with ice cream. Or merengue nests with ice cream and strawberries - always about 4 hours after dinner if we're fit for it!!

We tend to do Yule Log.

Mincemeat ice cream. Mix mincemeat with a good quality vanilla ice cream and keep in the freezer. If I'm being fancy, I put it in a pudding bowl and turn in out onto a plate, but out of a tub tastes just as good.

I sometimes make a chocolate roulade, filled with whipped cream and mandarin oranges. It looks like a Yule log, especially when dusted with icing sugar, and orange and chocolate are quite traditional flavours. It is quite rich, but very light.

I have always bought the chocolate and ginger puddings which are sold every year by the PA at the school I used to work at. They are made by a company which makes puddings for Fortnum & Mason and are delicious. As I’ve just retired, I’m going to need to remember to order this year, so I’m glad you posted!

Creme Brulee is a winner so far. DH and I love it and it's not too far out for the IL's (pasta is exotic in their world). We can have it prepped in advance as well.

My DM always does a hazelnut meringue with cream and raspberries and it's a Christmas highlight but it doesn't feel right to try to do her "thing". Don't think she'd mind!

OP, your mum might like to bring her hazelnut special, but it might be difficult to ask in a way that doesn't pressurize her to do it.

Have you got guests? Will the be aware of the lack of Christmas pudding? I would be bitterly disappointed if that happened to me as the Christmas pudding is the highlight of the meal (for me).

Cece the only guests will be the IL's. We've had several Christmas dinners with them and no one present has ever claimed to be that keen on Christmas pudding.

DM is not coming so it might be a bit much to ask her to do us a hazelnut meringue. She has done it when CD (Christmas Dinner) was at DB's and thereby hangs a tale! Short version she did it for a CD at DB's and it didn't get eaten, everyone was too full as the preceding courses were massively over-catered and served about 2 hours later than planned. DM upset and angry.

I think your DM would be delighted, rather than anything else, that you wanted to serve her recipe! When my DC's are all grown I'd absolutely love it if they chose to make some of the dishes they've grown up with x
