I have just seen this on Facebook.

'The city leader was arrested earlier today by Merseyside Police along with four other men in connection with offences of bribery and witness intimidation'

Liverpool is the proverbial rotten borough. Everyone votes labour and always have so no one is concerned about winning over voters. They only need worry about maintaining their power in their local party and then they can be sure of a job on the council for life.
That's why Britain needs PR badly. 650 seats and maybe 100 are not rotten Boroughs in reality.

Ooh thank you for the link ItsLateHumpty
This is good news indeed, sympathies to the Spanish though.

Hello everyone. Please do not speculate about the case and those involved as this could be considered prejudicial to legal proceedings. Thank you.

@Nomnomarrgh

I’m more upset about the post later in the paper about the OAP who responded to the breakdown of his marriage by watching children getting raped online. He walked free from court because he’s working on his problem... So glad I left Liverpool.
It's hardly Liverpool's fault- unless you think that viewing images of CSA doesn't happen elsewhere?

The Lib Dems controlled Liverpool between 1998 and 2012. Prior to the 80s it was often Tory controlled.

I agree the city do themselves no favours voting for Labour though. The local party has always been a mess.

Thanks sunset I’m sorry I couldn’t remember who started the thread or what it was called, but I think collating all this paints a bigger picture it’s good to be aware of (as I’m sure you know as you put it all in one place to begin with)

That's ok!

There's a link here to a brief video of him being vile about the Liverpool ReSisters (he also seems to describe himself as transgender, though it may just be poor grammar and over-excitement).

just back on here and saw that link above about the Resisters.
Is he not fragrant?

Couldn't agree with this more. I'm from Liverpool originally and my Pa always said a donkey with a red rosette would win the vote in Liverpool.
Joe is certainly a highly divisive figure. Not sorry he was arrested...

😤🤐I can only hope for justice for Liverpool in re: these public servants and a thorough airing of Nolan Principles.

TitusMoan · 07/03/2025 13:32

A pity that Degsy who is now 77 will certainly avoid jail time.

If anyone wants to see how it was, watch Alan Bleasdale’s magnificent tv series, GBH.

Updating this long-ago thread to share the news that Joe has been charged with a whole long list of new things:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c17qn4ng0gko

It's quite astonishing how often these men that try to silence gender critical women get charged with crimes isn't it? 🤔 there's a definite pattern.

It’s unaccountable - baffled as to a plausible connection because it’s beyond comprehension. Unless it’s a variation on Gluck when she discussed various topics with @glinner - video here. And argues there has been a pre-emptive attack on women and lesbians because of their ability to spot patterns.

Its voters are relentlessly anti Tory

True, but that has allowed dreadful politicians to control the council for decades. Its how Joe Anderson has retained the position of mayor, despite his tipping off a paedophile, and using council money for his own legal fees

It wasn't that long ago that Mike Storey ( Lib Dem) was in charge. He wasn't rotten at all, and Joe Anderson has not been the leader for years now. He's been sat at home waiting, almost five years, for the police to actually bring charges.

These corruption charges relate to planning and contracts in the building and development side of things. Joe certainly had bullying tendencies.....but to his credit, in his own way, he did have the city's interests in his heart - even though he was misguided and fell foul of years of a certain type of culture which is common to many councils, and certainly in Liverpool.

Yes Joe did tip off a colleague allowing him time to destroy evidence. www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/liverpool-teacher-acccused-downloading-child-3445705

He was vile to the Liverpool resisters.

This is some of the least surprising news I've heard all year

I was at that council meeting, and yes he was his usual bulllying self.....but he's not all bad....and is largely a product of his background and of a certain culture in the city......shaped by decades of under-investment and managed decline. And of a radical Tory hating politics - with roots in Irish nationalist subversiveness.

What has a whole city got to do with the actions of individual men?

Shortshriftandlethal · 07/03/2025 19:34

MerchedCymru · 04/12/2020 21:25

His misogynistic bullying of the wonderful Liverpool ReSisters (inventors of the penis stickers and all round good eggs) was distressing to watch and must have been even more distressing to experience.

And just to make sure they knew who was in charge, and whose voice mattered, he announced that all public toilets in the city would be made mixed-sex.

An abusive man abusing power. Then and, if the allegations are true, now.

The women, me included, were there because a motion had been passed to make all toilets in council owned buildings mixed sex.......this did not arise as an after-thought after the council meeting. The Resisters had been invited to speak out against the motion.

Yes, I see that now......but let's be clear what the charges are for.....they relate to implied corruption in planning and procurement of building contracts.....nothing else.

Anyway, its best not to speculate any further on a live case.
