In 2001ish I had a PSHE class. The classes were taken by different teachers for a term each and at this time it was taken by the schools reverend but for this one he invited in a group like life.
We were asked, without knowing who the group was, what we thought of abortion. I, and most of the class, said we were pro choice. We were well educated, private school princesses who knew that a baby in our teens was a) not done b) would ruin our imagined futures of Oxford, job in London, OE husband, etc.
He then said that he was the result of an affair. His mother, a married woman, got preg by her lover. When her DH found out he said she had to have an abortion. She refused, had the baby and gave him up for adoption. He said abortion would have been murder- it would have murdered him. He went on for a bit about being pro life anti choice and promoted adoption not abortion. At the end of the class he asked who was still prO choice and myself and my bf were the only ones who put our hands up. He told us we were disgusting. I was told off constantly throughout the class by the reverend for arguing with the man and gown a detention for being rude to a visitor. In retrospect I wish I had made more of a fuss.
It wasn't until 2003 that we had a sex Ed class that discussed contraception.
