What to do about a sex shop billboard?

We have a billboard advert on a main road near us. It is for a local sex shop. It's simply massive and at least 1/2 of it is taken up with a woman dressed as a bunny girl. The word 'sexy' is written in massive font across the advert.

I am desperate to get rid of it. It makes me really angry that my oldest daughter can read it; and that all my daughters are seeing it, nearly every bloody day.

What can I do? It's been defaced by feminists in the past, but it's just been replaced. A friend has said to check it's even got planning permission, but also to contact our local councillor and newspaper but what would I say!?

This is the first bit of activism I've done so I have no idea where to start!

Yeah - good point re outing yourself via google :)

I reckon advertising standards then.

Re the what to say thing, I used to really make sure I worded things really well and gave the best coherent argument. Then realised that it doesn't matter. They're not reading the argument, whether they give a shit and whether they have the power or inclination to do it does not depend on your argument. So I just go straight in now.

Not to say that's what everyone should do but that's what I found.

I have no idea who they were, Unrulysun. Was a good two or three years ago, though.

I don't really want to put a google map link to right near where I live on here! But suffice to say it's on a very main road through residential areas.

WMMC - what would you say, though? I don't want to just sound like a moaning minnie - I want to make a good argument, but I'm too new at all this to trust in my competence!

I always go straight to the councillor. Sometimes they do stuff, sometimes they don't.

Say what you said here to her.

Or someone could deface it a lot. Then they might give up or the defacer might get arrested and fined and then make the papers like those teenagers did recently.

Advertising Standards Authorities cover billboards so you could go down that route also.

Unrulysun · 10/02/2011 20:23

Nor do I but I'll be happy to come and write 'Really I'm a brain surgeon' across it with you. Who are the other feminists who have defaced it?

Planning is probably the right route - it affects your right to enjoy your local area in a significant way. We need to know more about it though - where is it? (google map link would be good)
