Suggest me a Persephone Book!

Following on from my post about visiting London for the day solely to book shop I'm planning on popping into Persephone Books.

Absolutely brand new to this publisher, can you please suggest your best recommendation as a good place to start with their range. I will try my best to limit myself to 2-3 books as I'll be visiting other places.

The Best Book Ever bar none.... The Fortnight in September by RC Sherriff. It is a quiet masterpiece.

Another vote for Dorothy Whipple. They Were Sisters and The Priory are my faves.

I’m not normally a huge poetry fan but Its hard to be hip over thirty buy Judith Viorst is one of my favourites. Also Doreen by Barbara noble and of course Dorothy Whipple

Dorothy Whipple and Marghanita Laski. A London Child of the 1870's is lovely. Katherine Mansfield's Journal.

Not so stealth boast - I have their whole catalogue up to no. 112 - legacy from my Dearest Dad who left me some money and I decided to splurge. The books sit on a specially purchased bookcase and is referred to as the 'DefenestratetheCat's Dad Memorial bookcase' It is my absolute prized possession!

Miss Pettigrew definitely. Great book. Also Mollie Panter-Downes' short stories "Good Evening Mrs Craven" are really good. Written during WWII. They show how mundane life was for a lot of people. Fascinating.

I too have a Persephone bookcase!

Dh has bought most of the books for me. His absolute claim to fame was he went in there and was choosing me a book - and guess who struck up a conversation with him? Benedict Cumberbatch!!
