Has anyone come across this book? It's written by Dr Andrew Jenkinson, who is a bariatric surgeon in London. Basically, it's about how to lose weight by lowering your body's natural set weight point. This may take a long time but it's sustainable and doesn't fuck your metabolism.

The book goes into a lot of detail about the causes of obesity, because he says it's important to understand why people are getting fat in the Western world. It pretty much comes down to eating too much omega-6 fat and sugar. The overall volume of food people eat doesn't matter.

I'm trying to work out how you would cut that out practically and I wondered if anyone had tried it. It sounds like going lower carb but not low carb as in low carb diets. He suggests eating low-carb breakfasts and throwing out bread (and anything else baked). I eat toast for breakfast most days and sandwiches for lunch. I'm trying to work out practical alternatives that I actually like.

Porridge
Full fat unsweetened yoghurt
Bacon and eggs
Omelettes
Soup
Oatcakes and cheese
Salads

Other rules include no takeaways or fast food or crisps etc, and no snacks, mainly because most snack food is carb-based with vegetable oil in it.

I find it quite easy to get over errors with this woe. Perhaps because there are no firm prohibitions, a slice of pizza doesn't lead to a binge. Good luck getting back on the wagon @OhMyChrist2020

Thanks samthebordercollie. I'm viewing maintaining as a win. My diet before was almost all processed foods so the changes I've made have been better for my body.
HighlandCowbag did you make your mayo with extra virgin olive oil? I've done that before and it's disgusting but regular olive oil is fine.

Thanks @Love51 I’m realising that craving chocolate and sugary foods has zero to do with hunger which is why you can never get enough of them! I’ve had my tea and won’t be succumbing to any more sugary shite tonight.

You are doing so well ladies, very inspiring. Im thinking stage 1 is going to take a while im doing fine no bread and im vegan so no butter or dairy. I like the analogy about if your granny wouldnt eat it. Ive really got an awareness of what i am eating and trying to gradually make the changes often going for the lesser evil eg i like berries in my porridge, i know he says avoid fruit but overall its better fir me than toast and jam for example. I look forward to my palate changing and no longer eating processed crap x

Am about half way through the book. I like the ‘granny’ analogy!

I’m not sure if @StrawberryFizz26 has uploaded the book onto her kindle, but would suggest the paper version as you can then go back over certain sections more easily.

I have a good friend who is a Paleo fan. She’s put me on to this natural sugar replacement called Sukrin Gold. It’s good in cooking. Calorie free and tastes like brown sugar. Is that acceptable? Or does it have to be honey? I’m partial to a plain yoghurt after supper.

I’ve just had a read about sukrin and given I can’t pronounce the names of most of the ingredients, it would be a no from me, honey is more natural. However you need to have sustainable eating for this to work and if you want a bit of sukrin every now and again (and I am still drinking a can of Coke zero per day!) then crack on.

The idea is that over time you change your body so you aren't craving sugar. It does work. I did cold turkey, but if you need to do it more gradually, sweeteners can help to get you over the hump!

I think sweeteners are a really individual thing, they definitely stall my weight loss if I have too many but I know some other people are fine on them.

I saw a Facebook advert for avocado oil mayonnaise which looked interesting, although I am quite enjoying sour cream as a replacement for it.

Morning All,

I had a pig out with DP last night, fish and chips, pudding x 2 and prosecco but that's it I'm done.

I did a big shop last night and bought ingredients for a big pot of chilli, mushrooms, tomato's, halloumi and mozzarella, tuna, spinach, eggs.
I usually have yogurt and mixed berries of a morning anyway, then I'm going to have a nice salad for lunch and chicken with salad/veg or chilli and spinach for dinner.

I need to make sure that when it gets to dinner time, I don't give into the cravings for junk food, which is what happens to be every bloody day.

I love the sour cream as a replacement for mayo, I love sour cream anyway!!

I want to be careful not to eat too much fat though. I think that got me when I tried Keto.

Have just enjoyed pan-fried cod with sweet potato mash, broccoli, mangetout and courgette for lunch. Delicious! Planning to have chilli for dinner later. Still haven't weighed myself, that's 10 days now. Will hold out until the weekend and see whether there's been much change.

So far today, I've had x 2 coffees, natural yogurt with a banana and a little honey and for lunch, beef tomato, mozzarella, pesto, hummus and sun dried tomatos.

Chilli for dinner - does that sound okay? I didn't actually weigh myself before starting but I'll do it tomorrow and then once a week.

Must be chilli day, that's what I am planning too! Chillis is fine Strawberry, as long as you make it from scratch yourself and use the right cooking oils etc.

I had cheese and tuna salad for lunch, then chilli and rice later and possibly strawberries and cream afterwards. I've been a bit headachey today for some reason. I am having carbs but don't know it there are enough to keep me out of keto, need to look at what I am eating I think. Might not be related but I have been bit headachey the last few weeks. May just be sugar withdrawal in the week after a boozey weekend.

I don't like sweetners tbh, I use honey occasionally on yoghurt and fruit and a squidge in salad dressings. I do drink cordial and the occasional can of fizzy pop but have ginger cordial and it doesn't have sweetners and san pelligrino which I don't think does either but they don't have added sugar so an occasional glass won't hurt.

So green leafy veg and crustiferous veg seem to be the best foods to eat. If they are so good for us, why don't they taste better? Shouldn't we have evolved to really like them?

I've been looking at the omega profiles of various foods. Cruciferous veggies and leafy greens ftw.

I've bunged everything for my chilli in the slow cooker, no oil actually used.
I usually use rapeseed oil. Is this good or not?

I have converted myself to leafy green veg by doing more with them and trying to make them a dish in their own right. Cabbage, Cavalo Nero or spring greens chopped roughly and sautéed with butter, salt, pepper and chilli flakes is really good, as is roasting kale until it becomes crispy like Chinese seaweed. Dark leafy veg also pairs really well with balsamic vinegar, anchovies and garlic, or smoked sea salt is good too. I try to add handfuls of spinach to most dishes and I make a saag paneer regularly.

I love brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower etc. Either as main veg, side veg, or cold in a salad.
I've just found out that the flax and chia seeds I've been sprinkling liberally in my fromage blanc and yogurt are very good sources of omega 3. Not as good as oily fish, but it's definitely worth trying if you don't eat fish.
I thought Dr J was against all seeds and nuts but I listened on audiobook when running and cycling and the speaker (who wasn't very loud at the best of times) sometimes got drowned out by wind. Not mine!

I thought it was all seeds too, but chia and flax both have really good ratios.

Yes chia and flax are both OK I think. I know I could feed my chickens flax seed and get higher omega 3 eggs.

I think though that they aren't as high in something, AHAs or something similar and it's that fat that is good for us? I only know because I was reading about an omega 3 supplement earlier. But they have other benefits as well so I don't think they will do any harm.
