I Quit Sugar - anyone up for this?

Cappster · 10/04/2015 13:51

I tried quitting sugar during January and it was really good - I lost a few pounds, ate really well, felt very good (after initial detox Blush)

I need to do it again but it would be really good to have a bit of support

Any takers?

Starting day 5 ( with a black coffee in bed .... I know how to live ! )
Had a sneaky weigh in , and I've lost 1lb :)

I work in a cafe , and found myself eating those nice little biscuits that go on the coffee saucer .
Decided I had to stop , and added a few more bits to stop as well .

I have the books Deliciously Ella , and I Quit Sugar , but I've made up my own rules

So no jam , honey , mayo , salad dressing , cake or biscuits , no sweets or chocolte

I don't drink canned drinks or squash ( I only drink water , coffee and wine )

More fresh vegetables and lots of tap water

I filled a 2 litre sparkling water bottle with tap water and keep in the fridge , so I know how much I've drunk

Onward and feeling good

Morning may I join please. My sugar addiction is crazy. I too am making my own rules.

1 keep out of the biscuit tin.
2 keep out of the kids sweets tin.
3 don't buy sweets biscuits or chocolate.
4 stop eating the kids left offer Easter eggs.
5 I don't need something sweet after every meal.
6 no more hot chocolate from the vending machine at work.

I will still eat fruit and my mum is the best baker in the world so I will have the odd piece of cake. The thought of no more cake makes me miserable. My aim is to have a piece of cake without the binge afterwards. I have done thus before and the longest I have done is 10 days.

Right I have wrote it down so I have to do it now.

I have been a week without eating biscuits, ice cream, cake, chocolate and I think I have turned a bit of a corner. I actually don't think I was addicted to sugar as I have none of the headaches, etc, now I've stopped.

What I'm struggling with is allowing myself a piece of Brie for lunches, as for most of my life (I'm 51) saturated fat has been the big no-no. But I have always found that cheese is very good at satiating hunger.

I am still puzzled as to why maple syrup and honey and dates are good and cane/beet sugar isn't? Surely they create the same chemical reaction in the body?

I would think the same too. Abraid.

I'm over a week now...9 days I think.

Anyone starting I think it's good to give it a week of total no sugar. Let your body feel what's it like without this false friend.

It will let the craving die back.

Then if you eat a little now and then shouldn't be too detrimental if lots of other good stuff is in place.
Welcome Bell

It's all good ;-)

Abraid- in my book, maple syrup, honey and dates aren't allowed. I haven't had them as I feel like it would be just changing the form of the sugar- it's still fructose.

Msrisotto - I didn't eat any nuts yesterday!! And I wasn't even trying! Woo hoo.

Day 4 for me, and I feel a bit sad about never eating cake again. Sad However, I know this is right for me, and I am consoling myself with the fact that I can eat bread and butter and chips!!

Just found out that whilst Tesco and Waitrose crusty bread has sugar in, Lidl crusty White and high protein bread doesn't! And neither do their croissants!!!! Yay!

Yes, still fructose, peachy.

I will still eat fruit, though. At the moment, I am trying to stick to the less sweet varieties until my palate is rebooted.

Same here. I'm eating fruit too, but a max of two pieces a day.

I have just had a tooth out so that is a massive incentive to give up Sad

I'm not at all hungry but I am craving sugary treats (doesn't help that someone has brought jam doughnuts my FAVORITE into the office).

Have a Lidl croissant MsR!

Who brought that cake in here? Peachy, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Thank you peachy! I came through it in the end thankfully.

However, on Saturday I am going out for dinner with family. MrR copies whatever food fad I do and I know for sure that 2 of us not eating dessert is not going to be a easy task! Others only feel ok about eating dessert if they're not alone. There will be heavy peer pressure, and I am weak...

Sorry! Biscuit whoops! My finger slipped!

I'm CRAVING juice and I don't even normally like it! I want sweetened cranberry juice! Confused

Staying strong...

I wouldn't mind something sweet, myself. Trying to be strong, too. It's not overwhelming and I actually feel very good, less tired than I normally do and more on a level. But I just wouldn't mind some chocolate or something. I won't, though.

My first day has gone well, I went out for breakfast this morning and it was served with beans. I ate them without thinking. But I have managed to stick to the rest of my rules. I haven't binged and I haven't craved anything sweet. Saying that having a tooth out is putting me off sweets forever ! Tomorrow will be a test with the hot chocolate at work.

What is wrong with beans?

Report
Doilooklikeatourist · 07/05/2015 22:36

Tinned beans are high in sugar and salt .

Good day here , very busy and didn't manage breakfast til 11 ( toast and butter )

Lunch was salad with cheddar cheese and lemon juice dressing

Dinner pasta and cheese sauce ( mushrooms , onions and tomatoes in the sauce )
big glass of wine

Feeling good and very pleased with myself

Another sugar free day today.

Tired though.

Must be day 9 or 10.

Pasta also acts in the body like sugar. Very high on the GI scale.

Dowser · 08/05/2015 06:54

True millilli also white rice

We had a lush shepherds pie last night topped with sweet potato.

msrisotto · 08/05/2015 08:06

Well yes, carbs, fats and protein are/can be digested as sugar in the end, but we do need a bit of sugar so lets not throw out the baby with the bath water.

I am finding that the avocado is my friend. They really fill me up and feel 'rich' enough to be a treat on a piece of wholemeal bread.

Either because of the lack of sugar, or the avocados and nuts, or because of all these factors, my skin, a week in, feels very soft and smooth. I keep having to touch it.

Going out to coffee with some friends. Will be a challenge. I would prefer not to have any cake/biscuits, but I may just have to have a small biscuit or something so as not to answer lots of questions. I can probably afford an occasional treat, but the challenge will be not letting the sugar push me into craving lots and lots of it. May have to come home and eat an avocado and some nuts to get the blood sugar level smoothed out.

I am going to buy a big bag of whole almonds because I successfully made some almond butter in my food processor, which has been useful to have as a low-sugar treat at times I would have had a biscuit (or 300).

Could keep a nakd bar in your bag abraid for those eating out moments.

SW used to do a sweet treat with peanut butter and dried fruit. Kept in fridge.

Yes I agree we all need a bit of sugar( carb) so am trying to keep mine as natural as possible.
If at home, I substitute brown rice for white, but wouldn't worry about eating white rice in a restaurant.

I have been cutting down since Tuesday - not long but being as I used to get 3 o clock cravings for sugar, I thought I would feel something like withdrawal symptoms. Its make me worry that I am not doing it correctly.

Had meat and veg for dinners, nuts as a snack. No biscuits, chocolate or treats ( even managing to avoid the birthday cakes in the kitchen!)

Ah well, even so I do feel better in myself.
