Tell me about teething, cos dd is crying and my friend has just told me that teething doesn't hurt.

she read it somewhere in a magazine.

but i'm sure dd goes off her food when cutting a tooth, so how can it be true?

or is it, as she was suggesting, just what we say when our children are crying and we can't be bothered workign out what's really wrong with them?

some of the stuff i've read about teething seems to really down-play any problems it can cause - i think in an attempt to stop people putting genuine illness down to teething and not seeking medical help

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/05/2007 17:59

did it hurt when your wisdom teeth came thru?
most will say yes. i know mine did!!
so for most babes, teething canes!

MadamePlatypus · 22/05/2007 17:55

Wow your friend has a long memory! I don't know if teething hurts as I can't remember, but I reckon that the symptoms - swollen red cheeks, loads of dribbling and crying indicate that it might not be the most comfortable thing in the world.

sandcastles · 21/05/2007 01:35

AitchTwoOh, all the dentists I have worked with say that nappy rash etc ISN'T connected, but I think that is bollocks, as the ONLY time dd got nappy rash was when was teething. IMO, the whole nappy rash/teeting thing....when they are teething their defences are low, therefore the normal level of acidity in their wee/poo causes more problems for their little tummys/bums hence the nappy rash etc...

Teething hurts...the teeth have cusps that literally cut the gum. Teething hurts, otherwise why do babies/children cry with discomfort? For fun???

Your friend had obv never had a wisdom tooth come thru!

AitchTwoOh · 21/05/2007 00:49

well, yes. but i've been lookign and the american dental society website also says that teething doesn't hurt. and is there actually any proof for that ph thing about the soggy nappies? i mention this despite the fact that dd has a red cheek, is pulling at her ear and has done an horrifically cheesy nappy today...

erm of course teething hurts! same as toothache hurts!

LongDistanceClara · 20/05/2007 23:39

I like it, EIS, I like it.

Will tell DH too - he was changing one of DS2's the other day and I came back into the room 3 minutes after I'd left it to find him frozen in position, DS2 unchanged in front of him going "I'm going to be sick"

expatinscotland · 20/05/2007 23:38

Here's my top tip.

If they're really pongy, spritz a bandana with some water mixed with lavender oil. If it's really bad, just throw some essential oil directly on the bandana and tie it over your face.

Sounds daft, but I boak easily.

DontlookatmeImanervouswreck · 20/05/2007 23:37

Your friend is bonkers.

Oh wait, "she read it in a magazine" must be true then

And the chewingand crying, drooling, going off food, rank mucousy nappies that all happen just before a new tooth appears are just a coincidence.

LongDistanceClara · 20/05/2007 23:36

DS2's are appalling atm - it just hadn't clicked at all. I wanted to cut my nose off earlier!

expatinscotland · 20/05/2007 23:34

Clara
DD2 always has runny nappies around teething times.

She had an explosive one today. Was vile. Had to open the window, and yes, there was frantic washing out of clothes afterwards.

Chandra · 20/05/2007 23:30

Your friend is an idiot, and so is my GP who told me exactly the same...

In paper it doesn't hurt, in real life it does.

LongDistanceClara · 20/05/2007 23:29

EIS, I have JUST realised why DS2's nappies are so stenchsome thanks to your post - thank you!

Christ, you wouldn't know I'd done this before...!

expatinscotland · 20/05/2007 23:28

Nailpolish's daughter just spiked a fever due to teething her molars and she's two.

It happens.

Oh, the nappies! The teething nappies!

expatinscotland · 20/05/2007 23:27

I feel your pain.

DD2, 17 months, is cutting two top molars.

And we've got the explosive nappies to prove it.

She now boaks Medised. It does taste pretty vile.

Try orange Nurofen.

Cut up some muslin cloths into quarters. Wet them and wring them out. Then freeze them. Give them to baby to suck.

LongDistanceClara · 20/05/2007 23:26

41.3 was his highest.

LongDistanceClara · 20/05/2007 23:26

DS1 had temps of over 40 when he cut each tooth.

WanderingTrolley · 20/05/2007 23:24

Smack your friend hard in the mouth. Use enough force to loosen a few teeth. Try it with a brick.

Go on.

It won't hurt her.

You read it on the internet.

cece · 20/05/2007 23:19

DD cired for 2 hours exactly for each tooth as it came through.

DS hardly noticed his teeth coming through!

hodgeymum · 20/05/2007 23:08

my wisdom tooth is giving me grief but my 6mth old has cut her first 2 teeth this wk and is still full of smiles.she is obviously a tougher cookie than me!

mummytosteven · 20/05/2007 23:02

bollocks! I have an impacted wisdom tooth that occasionally gives me grief when it tries to come through - so I reckon that is pretty much how babirs feel about teething

colditz · 20/05/2007 23:00

Article crock of shit. How else can you explain squillions of babies getting the poops, and sore ear and chronic nappy rash, and then popping a tooth? Coincidence?

Twinklemegan · 20/05/2007 22:59

My Miriam Stoppard book and another one by Penelope Leach both say cutting the incisors shouldn't really hurt and not to use Calpol or local anaesthetic. But I can't bear to see DS in pain.

Twinklemegan · 20/05/2007 22:58

"It can be a bit easy to put every symptom down to teething and miss a tummy upset or ear infection, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt."

  • DS has the perforated ear drum to prove it . TBH I was a bit relieved though - if his incisors had really been THAT bad, I couldn't bear to contemplate what he'd be like with his molars.

I still think teething hurts him as well though - a lot.

mummynumnum · 19/05/2007 20:15

Without a doubt my dd has teething pain. Gurning, dribbling, irritable, poking her gums with her finger and then day or two later a tooth breaks through and she is fine. God some journalists do write alot of crap.
