This is a level 5 legendary bird one. You need about 7 people for this

Can someone please explain the new gyms and raids please? I haven't visited a gym before.

Gyms now have 6 slots (more gyms were added to the game to compensate the loss of 10 slot gyms). If the gym is already your teams and there's a free space, you don't have to battle, you can just add one in.

You can get a maximum of 50 coins a day which is usually earnt after 8 hours. If you have more than one Pokemon come back from a gym in a day and you've already hit your 50 coin limit, you won't earn anything.

Pokemon only come out of a gym when battled, not from low motivation.

Fighting gyms is similar, but the longer a Pokemon is in a gym the less motivation it has (the little heart above it's head). However, people can feed them berries to up their motivation. The less motivation a Pokemon has, the easier it is to take down.

You can also now spin all gyms like PokeStops, and if it's your teams, you get bonus items.

Raid battles! A Pokemon will appear above a gym counting down to when it ends. The Pokemon above said gym is the Pokemon you will fight and have a chance to catch if you defeat it.

Currently, you get a 2 hour window, but that might change after Legendaries disappear. During that two hour window you can spend a raid pass (you get 1 free raid pass every day from spinning a gym) and fight the boss as many times until you defeat it. Once defeated, it can't be fought again.

The little heads on a raid determine how easy it is.

Level 1 raids (one head) can be soloed.

Level 2 raids (two heads) can be soloed if you have the right Pokemon with the right type and movesets and you're a high enough level.

Level 3 raids (three heads) need 3 - 4 people.

Level 4 raids need 8 - 9 people.

Level 5 raids (legendary raids) need at least 7, but can need up to 12 - 14 people (Lugia!) depending on the legendary.

Only after you spend your raid pass can you see who else is in the lobby, which is really annoying. So my suggestion is don't spend your raid pass unless you see other people about and they're looking like they want to raid too. Otherwise you'll waste your raid pass and you can't get it back!

Once in the lobby you get 120 seconds to pick your Pokemon (never go with the suggested line up and never use Blissey in a raid battle!).

Check your local facebook to see if there's a group in your area. My town has a WhatsApp group where we organise people for raids and meet to make sure we have enough.

Once defeated, you get rewards (rare candies, golden razzberries, charge and fast TMs, revives and lots of experience)and then you get a chance to catch it.

How many premier balls you get depends on gym control (who owns the gym), how much damange you and your team did etc. More balls = more chances.

Once the balls are gone, the Pokemon runs away and you've lost your chance to catch it.

Hopefully that explains the majority of it! I've probably missed stuff out but there's a lot to learn Grin

If you have any questions, please do feel free to ask Smile

Unfortunately won't be back before the event ends but takes my 'd'ex une to 235!

Less good that recent nest migration gives me girafarig in the local park- doesn't even evolve Sad

No, it doesn't evolve but it is a rare Pokemon a lot of people struggle to get their hands on so it will help some.

This is what I love about MN. You can seek advice on the best curry or breastfeeding or how to deal with a CFN on your drive, or how a Pokemon raid works. Marvellous. Grin

Oh and if your lucky your area has a map where you can see which raids are where and when they finish. One for South Wales is pogosw.us

We don't have a Working Pokemon map at the moment though 🙁 Just the raid one. You need to switch raids on in settings and set which levels you want to see

The entire world has a gym map - it's gymhuntr.com Smile

Just put in your area and it shows you all the gyms, who owns them, if a raid is currently active and if so which Pokemon and how long left.

Oh yes I totally get it Smile A geodude nest would have been brilliant - Golems are so useful, especially at the moment for fighting Zapdos (if they have double rock and you particularly want Stone Edge).

Also thanks to this thread I've found a local Pokémon group so I have a chance on raids (when the timing means they don't disturb baby's naps- dragged him out in the sling in pouring rain for failed attempt at moltres!)

Why don't Niantic just release their own gym and Pokémon map? It seems to me that I'm the only person who doesn't use them. It would be nice to have official authorised maps. It also be great to have a official way of get detailed iv stats. I just use the in game method at the moment.

WhatToyou're such a fountain of pokeknowledge and so helpful on this thread

This ^, it's very much appreciated.

Ah the nest change meant my local park is now charmander so finally got a charizard tonight, not many have appeared round here before. Took down 3 gyms tonight so I think I'm getting the hang of them now!

PokemonGo Probably because it's already been done and perfected; there would be no need, and they're already focused on so much.

They won't release more IV stats than are in the game. If you're interested in checking IVs (and if you want to be good at fighting you probably should be), get PokeGenie.

It only needs a screenshot and for you to input your appraisal and there you go.

I've joined a local Facebook group and went to three raids today. There were about 40 people roaming the streets raiding. It was brilliant. I caught a zapdos, but still don't have Lugia. I'm very jealous of the red Gary on the last thread.

EekBarbaraItsaDalek it's fun isn't it? I really enjoy roaming the streets raiding with groups or us all driving around in our cars from one raid to another. I also try and walk to one in my lunch hour rather than sitting on my backside in the coffee room.

It's not cheap buying raid passes but 6 passes are not much more than a Starbucks coffee with the offer boxes.

Have had a very successful raid day today - I got 3 Zapdos (one 91% IV) and DS got 3 as well. DP got 2 as did the 2 friends who came with us. One of them also caught the lugia we battled and that was their first lugia so we're all pretty happy!

Just an update on the glitch with the last ball in raids: DP and 3 other local players caught legendaries with their last ball today at various raids so I think they've fixed it.

No Zapdos for me, defeated but couldn't catch the bugger. Spent Wednesday in a very rainy London, caught my Kanga and a handful of Unown so was worth it, plus visited the portrait gallery which was fantastic.

Back to Smallsville and noone plays so can't have another crack at the birds.

Been to Newcastle and actually caught this! I wasn't far off being able to evolve one but a nice bonus.
Didn't get much else of note though....
