Borgen Series 2

Anyone else looking forward to this starting tomorrow night (BBC4, 9pm)?

I loved the first series and have been using serious willpower to stop myself buying the second series or looking up spoilers online (Denmark and some other countries are a year ahead of us). Have to confess that I have read some articles which give info of some of the plot lines but I won't put on any spoilers other than to say that it sounds good but a bit hard going at times, a lot darker than series 1.

Seriously don't think I've ever been this excited about a television programme, I actually wish the BBC would just show one episode a week rather than two back to back to draw it out for longer!

But Doesnt Katrine know he loves her? I thought she just doesn't want to be with him. I do though ! Grin

The guy playing Kaspar was also in Forbrydelson2(?) wasn´t he?

thepeanutsparent Kasper was always hot, he was just portrayed as being so sleazy in the early episodes of S1 that it was difficult to even go there. I think it was only once we knew about his childhood that we were meant to start warming to him a bit. I know this because on re-watching S1 from the start I couldn't believe that I hadn't noticed how gorgeous he is! The actor who plays him is a pretty big deal in Denmark afaik, he's been in some critically acclaimed films and does lots of theatre work Didil you're correct, he played the soldier David Gruner in TK2. There is also a photo on his official website where he looks so devastatingly handsome that you may actually forget to breathe for a second or two (or maybe that's just me Wink)

I don't know if Katrine knows that he loves her or not. When they did the flashbacks to their relationship in S1 and showed them breaking up she said something like "I think we love each other but this doesn't work." Whatever it was she said it sounded as if they'd never actually told each other that they loved one another at that point. She couldn't bear the fact that he constantly lied about his family and that mistrust affected the whole relationship. I think it's really difficult to understand what Katrine thinks of him, she seems to swing from regarding him as her closest friend and confidant (she called him to sort everything out when Ole died in the first episode) to acting as if she despises everything he stands for. Her response when he told her he couldn't be in contact with her anymore was odd (you're punishing me for having sex with you) as you would think she would be able to read him and realise that it was because she rejected him. I do think that her lack of 'getting it' with Kasper kind of discredits the fact that she's meant to be this amazing investigative journalist but it does draw parallels with Birgette's story of having a great professional life but failing in her personal life. In any other drama I would be totally confident that the writers would let them get together in the end but given this is Borgen where there seems to be so much personal misery against the backdrop of successful careers I don't want to bet on it.

I felt unbelievably sorry for Birgette in these episodes, the scene at the breakfast table where she was talking to the kids about meeting the new girlfriend was well played. I can recall a spookily similar conversation from my childhood with my Mum and sister when I was about the same age as Laura and I think I reacted exactly the same.

fifitrixibelle If you haven't already guessed I am also obsessed with Borgen (not just because of Kasper!). I find it really difficult to get out of my head for at least a couple of days after I watch it. There is honestly nothing else on TV which has come close for me. My Mother is genuinely perplexed that I don't want her to babysit tomorrow night so that DH can take me out for my birthday! I watch it with my DH and it is slightly uncomfortable viewing, I work in a job which has long unsociable hours but I'm lucky enough to really enjoy it and I have ambitions to continue to progress in my career and ulitimately get a very senior job. Does mean that I'm away from the DD's quite often but my DH takes on more than his fair share of domestic responsibilities, it's okay most of the time although it causes friction from time to time. My DH is pretty vocal about Birgette and we definitely don't agree on her, I know she isn't perfect but I can completely see things from her point of view while my DH has written her off as selfish and egocentric. We've had to agree not to talk about it as I get really cross! Probably because I take the criticism personally although I know it's not meant that way at all. I do find it all a bit depressing though, I think Borgen is a very realistic portrayal of how women struggle to have a successful personal and work life, that no matter how open-minded and liberal men are there are some deeply ingrained gender roles which come through when the pressure is on. Before Birgette became PM she was leader of the party so surely Philip was used to being the main carer and had been for some time. I know that becoming PM would have hugely upped the ante but it seemed to be more about a power thing, he felt emasculated by her position.

Looking forward to tomorrow's double bill again but it's all going so fast!

The time does fly by, I can never quite believe the full episode is finished by the end.

The Kasper/Katrine story is a classic, "Can't live with you, can't live without you". Not saying she is entirely uncomplicated but he has lots of baggage so maybe if he ever gets time to sort out his personal affairs, he'll be open to making a fresh start with Katrine, once free of his past.

I watched Borgen first last year, then Killing 1, 2 and 3 and now Borgen doesn't really cut it for me in the same way - for some reason Sarah Lunch much more watchable than Birgitte (although her hair is fab when she does it in that bun that looks like pastry Grin)
But that's not to say I am not enjoying it.
DH and I also have a French thing Engrenages Engrenages which we have started to watch too.
But I do like a bit of Castle too BlushGrin

Engrenages, ooh edgy! Laure is something else, isn't she? Great cast.

I too love Borgen more than I should and think about it between episodes. This series is better so far and I feel sorry for Brigitte as she can't have a happy family life and be a successful State Minister. Can't wait for tomorrow's double bill!

Yes, I think about it till about the Tuesday, and then in Thursday the anticipation starts to build. I think it's because the subtitles make you concentrate. I was just saying to DH on the way home from work how much I was looking forward to it...

The Times review for tonight's episodes is actually making me feel a bit anxious! "Emotionally explosive" apparently...

Love love love the influx of Scandinavian series. Plus, what was that fantastic French series - female police detective, a corrupt red haired female lawyer?

There have been some great US imports over the years, but some less so and it's great that the net is widening.

Over here they called it "Spiral" or in France known as "Engrenages" starring Caroline Proust.

Watched a few episodes of S1 of Spiral (on Netflix I think). Really enjoyed it and must go back to it soon although still have all of Homeland S2 to watch. I find I don't have time to watch anywhere near as much good TV and films as I'd like Grin

So... they're showing the last 2 episodes of Borgen at the Edinburgh Filmhouse on 3rd Feb (day after they're screened on BBC4) followed by a Q&A with Sidse (Birgette!)

Tickets purchased already but now have to think of a 'killer question' to ask her. Considering completely bypassing any attempt at asking a well thought out, intelligent question and asking how on earth she gets the bun in her hair THAT BIG!

You have two weeks to submit your question suggestions Smile

Eagerly awaiting tonights episodes, from the hype in the papers today, they are going to be rather sad in places ... we shall see.

Am very envious of you going to see her in the flesh, I do love it when she speaks english so naturally, impeccable accent and vocab. Sickening!

I guess my killer question would be to ask her exactly where she gets her inspiration from - which politicians does she admire and try to emulate - I ask because we were discussing this with the kids the other day - which politiians do THEY admire and think do a good job ( this after watching PMQs with both of them - they are teenagers - they were horrified at the way everyone shrieks at each other, talk about raising blood pressure.....). They couldnt really think of anyone AT ALL which was very sad. I would love to know who Brigitte is modelled on, if anyone, as the way they always conduct their politics seems very grown up and civilised.

Would love to know how it goes. Maybe we could get her as a guest speaker on MN?

Hello everyone
Have missed the thread for the first couple of weeks but HAD to find you all tonight to ask - was that (ep 6) one of the most powerful hours of drama to hit our screens? The unfolding of Kaspar's story, even worse than we had imagined. The terrible pressure on Brigitte's daughter. The lines about not robbing our children of their childhood. Just - awesome

But yes, great episodes... That bit when Kasper and Birgitte were practising the debate and he lost it... Shock
