Where does Karen in Colf Feet shop for clothes ?

I really envy Karen's look - jeans, layered tops, nice blazer & scarf. Its a look I would like to be able to pull off, although the fact she is tall and slim rather than short & fat might make a slight difference.
Where can I shop on the high street for the sort of layered tops & jumpers that she wears.

I'd love someone to say to me that I haven't aged! Some people age really well and look younger the older they get.
True facts! I've seen it with my own eyes.
Please God why not me!!?

There may be some women like that but I wouldn't say Hermione Norris was one of them. She looks great and she also looks older.

I don't want to sound like a nob but I'm curious: why tell someone like me I haven't aged when I clearly have? I know it's well intentioned and would never say anything back other than 'thank you' but I would much rather be paid a compliment that isn't a total, blatant lie. I'm sure if they tried, they could think of something that was true as well as flattering: my sweet and easy going personality, for example.

I think she looked good because of being slim, but the clothes are actually a bit boring

Flo, it's probably along the same lines when someone says 'I look fat' and the good intentioned partner/friend/acquaintance says 'no you dont' when they are a chunky monkey..I think people are just trying to be nice.

I don't like flannel or inane conversations that mean bugger all... but I do like compliments when they are well meant and not total bullshit.

I agree they're trying to be nice which is why I would never challenge it in real life - I'm not a complete arse! I'm still curious as to why they always choose to say that - when it clearly isn't true - rather than 'Flo, you look really good' or 'I like your hair' or 'That's a nice dress'.

I'm not crazy about her clothes except for the slim fitting black trouser suit and white shirt combo she wore in the opening episode. She looked fantastic in that. So sharp.

I have just bought a slightly tweedyish blazer from eBay for work and am thrilled to see Karen wearing something very similar this week. Not that I look remotely like Karen but I will feel marginally more stylish in said blazer now.

Flo, I mean this in the nicest way possible, please ease up on the age issue. I read MN pretty regularly and often notice you, very politely, 'correcting' fellow posters, usually over some fairly benign comment.

It's coming across like you're the one with issues about ageing, which I'm absolutely positive is not the case, things just have a tendency to get lost in translation online sometimes.

Forgot the point I came to make, now that I suspect is an age thing Blush

Karen had on the most beautiful pinky/coral coloured scarf which completely lifted her complexion the minute she put it on. I'd love to know where that was from. I have a lipstick that performs a similar miracle but I often feel over dressed in lippie so a scarf to fling on would be ideal.

Reprimand noted. Yes I do pick up on it. I'm glad you think I'm polite about it but I have no intention of giving up. You may have noticed that I wasn't the first or the only poster to point it out on this thread,

She is only 49 - which makes her three years younger than the boots ballerina in the anti-ageing ad. The fact that the latter looks 10 years older is partly hefty makeup and bad hair and partly that people age at different rates.

Norris may be a bit limited as an actress ( or is it the typecasting as posh bird with crap taste in men) but she looks very elegant. And real - some wrinkles. Good for her.

Hermionie Norris is an amazing actress! Did you ever see her as Ros in Spooks? Utterly brilliant performance.

I think we tend NOT to notice ageist comments because they're so pervasive and frequently used as to 'normalise' them. But if you examine the comment, it is ageist. E.g. 'you haven't aged at all'. Ageist, but we're so used to it that we often take it as a compliment without thinking about it. But 1. It's not true, and more to the point 2. Wtf is wrong with ageing?? What's so awful that we have to try and deny it?

I like Flo's critique of these comments.

Apologies, slightly totally off topic. I'm off to google Karen now....

They'll be from somewhere expensive I imagine. Who's in charge of the wardrobe dept on cold feet? Could tweet them and ask. I think soap wardrobe departments will sometimes say where a character's clothes are bought.

I would guess Jigsaw, Whistles, Karen Millen maybe? Then with some Zara, Topshop type bits thrown in.

Or whatever brands are stocked in Harvey Nichols as they're in Manchester.

She is an amazing actress.I can't believe someone said she was limited!
Agree she looks great too. I'm unsure if its just her wardrobe - a combination of height, being slim, posture and whether its her hairstyle or not, she appears to have a long neck. All of these combined give her a certain untouchable elegance I think.

You haven't aged a bit is nothing more than an innocent remark made in an affectionate way.

Agree about the elegance, wonder if she does Pilates?

Report
Fuzzypeggy · 09/10/2016 08:08

OHdearme, yes it is meant in an affectionate way, I don't think anyone is disputing that. But for the person receiving that comment, the underlying message, whether intentioned or not, is that looking like we've aged is bad. It is so built into our minds now that aging is a bad thing, that anything suggestion that we are looking younger than we are is hugely positive but it's often not true and it does suggest that you can't look good when you are older. As flo says, a compliment of you look great is fantastic, its ageless and shows that you can look fantastic Without your age being part of that equation. It's possible to look great, without looking great for 40, or 50 etc. For the record, I am not even 40 yet but seeing discussions on s&b about this kind of Thing has opened my eyes to it.

Posture is definitely key. I've been trying to make a conscious effort to stand and sit up straighter as I think I've started to slouch a lot recently. It weirdly makes you feel more confident.

Thanks for the comments. Totally agree it's well meaning but that's partly why I find it interesting. However I don't think we should derail this thread any further. (I may start a separate thread as I'm confined to the settee for a couple of days and running out of box sets.)

Back to Hermione Norris: agree it's partly her posture that makes her look so elegant. And the way she moves - dance training maybe?

I still don't think all those blacks and neutrals are doing her any favours but I think that's partly the character. She often looks sad in this series, I think. I hope they're not going to do anything cheesy and break her out into colour once she's shagged Eddie. (I'm a couple of episodes behind so maybe this has already happened?)

She may be a good actress but she is rather limited but that's probably a result of being typecast, there's no getting away from it. I said on the 'In The Club' thread, she always plays well heeled women with a murmuring voice and sardonic air Wink. If anyone watched that series, just picture her playing the mouthy broad Leeds cleaner who had the secret baby. You just can't, can you?

Anyway I do like her clothes. When she went out to dinner with Eddie and was wearing a red top (or dress) and red lipstick she looked particularly striking.

Fuzzy, thank you Smile

At almost 60 Im happy to meet people and catch up with them. Especially if we haven't seen each other for a long time. I wouldn't give it a second thought if someone said I hadn't aged a bit. For me it's a nonentity. I'd much rather walk away from them thinking that was a lovely catch up, life is good.
