First-time waxing... erm... down there

I have an appointment tomorrow for a wax. Never had one before. Been doing some reading about it beforehand and decided I'd like a normal bikini wax, but when I mentioned it to my husband, he revealed that he'd quite like me to have it all off (i.e. I believe it's called Hollywood or Brazilian?)

Is it going to hurt awfully to have it all removed in one go? How should I prepare? Should I shave/trim beforehand? (I'm completely au naturale at the moment)

Quite embarrassed to be asking, but thanks in advance Blush

Penguins - good memory, yes I am. Hence trying to neaten things up a bit before the big day Blush

Beauticians do all sorts of interesting things, it's not like they exclusively wax bums all day long! I'm a doctor and occasionally need to shove my finger in someone's back passage - if it needs to be done, it needs to be done! Grin As long as it's only a small part of my job description...

No one will care on the day.Smile

Just thought that the pain thing was worth bearing in mind. Don't want to sound like a stalker but Elle is a pregnant friend's name so I remembered ( Don't worry, we don't know each other irl. She is not medical).

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 20/08/2014 17:05

And, more importantly, your rl name probably isn't Elle...

ElleDubloo · 20/08/2014 17:11

LOL it's ok, I'm not worried you're a stalker :) I've been posting quite prolifically these days as I'm off work for a few days.

I take 2 nurofen plus before I go! Makes it ok. The sorest bit for me is below my section scar so quite high up. Underneath doesn't bother me. Arse doesn't hurt at all.

lunar1 · 20/08/2014 17:48

I have a Hollywood and it's fine, but I'm almost in tears when she does the inside of my leg near my ankle. I think everyone's different. Good idea to go for the bikini and work from there.

FoxSticks · 20/08/2014 17:54

Pregnancy definitely makes waxing more painful. I'd probably just stick to a normal bikini line wax and a trim for the big day. I'd also trim before you wax as long hair is more painful. Don't trim so much that there isn't enough hair for waxing though.

EmilyCHN · 20/08/2014 18:01

I used to have full Brazilians regularly..and when I went into labour it was all hair free down there. In hindsight, I think everything must have looked like an ovenready chicken.. all plucked, swollen and unattractive. This pregnancy I'm just going for the bikiniline not anything too overboard like last time.. My waxing lady is brilliant though and uses hotwax only which really doesnt hurt as much as the strips.. For her male clients she offers a "back, sack and crack" for a set price.. I wee'd a bit from laughter when she told me that..

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 20/08/2014 18:37

Doctors' fingers up bum holes is not quite the same as beauticians waxing bumholes IMO.

ElleDubloo · 20/08/2014 18:42

It's much worse, IMO!

FoxSticks · 20/08/2014 18:44

I guess it depends on whether you are the poker or pokee or waxer or victim client.

orangefusion · 20/08/2014 18:48

My waxer is fat and very sweet, she has seen em all. And she gets it all off in 35 mins. All of it (including underarms). It hurts a bit but it gets easier and the hair regrowth gets finer. I used to have the hairest legs ever, after 20 years of being waxed my lower legs now have almost no hair regrowth (maybe that's why it only takes 35 mins?).

Be prepared for an odd feeling down there once the hair is gone. Hair is there for a reason, it is a lubricant of sorts and stops skin from chafing. It feels quite weird initially.

ElleDubloo · 20/08/2014 18:53

What do you do to stop it from chafing afterwards? Do you use talcum powder or anything like that?

OP posts:
orangefusion · 20/08/2014 19:39

I hate talc, I really hate talc. I just put up with the chafing, wearing french knickers can help :)

ElleDubloo · 21/08/2014 15:22

ARRRGH! I HAD MY WAX!

In the end I managed to tolerate a full Hollywood but it was pretty painful. And she didn't get all of it off - there are a few hairs left in the areas that she waxed, and she didn't even attempt to do around the back passage. She said that the ones that are left will come out more easily at the next appointment, and she didn't want to try too hard to get them out this time because the skin is already sore. Does that sound reasonable?

Overall I'm pleased, she was really confident and efficient, and it was painful but not as painful as I'd expected. But I'm a little disappointed that there's still some hair left.

creamhearts · 21/08/2014 16:19

I am no expert but leaving hairs wouldn't impress me, and a proper Hollywood does include all the way round. I am glad it was not too painful for you though, and the next time with definitely be easier/less painful.

Pastperfect · 21/08/2014 21:22

Hmm I would not be impressed with a few hairs left. If it was your decision to stop then that is if course fine but if your therapist was making excuses for not continuing then you need to find someone else.

I don't find it painful now (been doing it years) but if I'm going to put myself through the discomfort and hassle then I want perfection - even if that means tweezers, which is what my therapist would do.

itsbetterthanabox · 22/08/2014 11:09

It is sore to go over places again and unhygienic. They should tweeze any remaining hairs.

FamiliesShareGerms · 22/08/2014 15:08

Tweezering hairs off your fanjo or bum hole??

You lot are mad! Smile

StripyBanana · 23/08/2014 07:04

Very mad!

Because the skin feels very silky afterwards and it makes sex even better! I like the slightly 'naughty' aspect of it.

SteveBrucesNose · 23/08/2014 10:23

So, this seems an appropriate thread to ask about how kempt/unkempt is acceptable before a first time nether region waxing?

Obviously just shaved won't give any results, but any ideas as to the optimum length?

Sounds ridiculous but this has been putting me off getting waxed didn't there for years, because I don't get the etiquette

Ta

ElleDubloo · 23/08/2014 10:29

SteveBrucesNose I went au naturale and the beautician said I did the right thing, because she could then trim it to the correct length. I didn't prepare in any way apart from having a shower beforehand.

In other news... It's day 2 after my first Hollywood wax and the pain has improved but hasn't gone away completely. Some parts are still sore when I touch. I thought it still felt surprisingly bumpy today, so I had a good close look in the mirror (difficult to do) and found several small pustules Shock I know they're pustules because I popped three of them and pus came out Shock

Pretty sure I'm never going back to that place again.

They are ingrown hairs. You can get a gel from Boots specifically for this issue. And gently exfoliate.
