I've posted before to say about hair dye cock ups but now I've taken the true biscuit.

Because my hair has been getting brassier and yellower, I decided today to dye it a darker brown. It's now black in patches and looks dreadful. Condition is ok but prob not for long.

I'm so stupid. I just want my plain old mousey brown hair back HmmHmmHmmHmm

if you go to you tube and search for hair dye disasters, there are lots of videos of others who have cocked it up! some show step by step how they corrected it at home, might help.

My hair began returning to its darker colour again after using colour B4, it re-oxidised or something like that. But you can sort it out. You can google it & I think there maybe you tube vids on how to do it also, it's a cheaper way to remove colour from your hair:

You need a tube of Vitamin C effervescent tablets. A bottle of claifiying (or deep cleansing) shampoo. Crush about 7 - 10 vit c tablets up in a little sandwich bag or carrier bag. Mix with about 4 - 5 tablespoons of shampoo in plastic bowl. You should end up with an orange froffy mess. Slather it into damp hair, massage it in. Wrap in clingflim & then a towel. Leave on for about an hour. Wash & condition. Your hair should be back to the colour B4 shade.

Get some head and shoulders, or clarifying shampoo and wash your hair in that, leave it in wrap your head in clingfish and sit under a hair dryer for at least Half and hour then rinse off, then wash hair again with same shampoo!

With colour before it shrinks the colour molecules to get rid and you need to leave it for a few days before re washing or re dying,

Doing the above should help remove the colour, then leave it alone for 48 hours and if you really desperate after that use a nice and easy wash in wash out dye one that lasts 6-8 washes

Check and double check on that pack that's it says about the amount of washes as if you buy a 'semi permenant' usually they last a lot longer say 20 washes, of you use one of them your hair will go darker and darker again

If you wash it with declarifying shampoo or something like head and shoulders that might also fade the colour a bit. Those are certainly ones I avoid when I'm trying to hang onto my colour Smile

It's stuff to do with colour molecules oxidising - that's why it would have gone darker today.

You can use baby shampoo / head and shoulders / fairy liquid to help lift the colour but it will more than likely go orange / red.

I have in the past had issues with over processed hair and recommend protein treatments to help hair recover (like a mayonnaise or egg treatment) I also avoided proper dye for a while to give my hair time to recover and used a wash out hair dye mousse from Sally's - the colour stays for a few washes but it is messy to apply.

I personally wouldn't recommend color B4 as it ruined my hair and took over a year to get it back to normal.

I'm confused.
I treated my hair overnight with argan oil. Condition is ok.
I've washed and conditioned my hair this morning and dried it gently on a cool heat.

It's darker again. Not the gothic streaky dark it was yesterday, but darker. Definitely.

Eh????

I'd say definitely do a lighter semi than you need as your hair is porous and will grab any colour. Read the instructions, they recommend leaving it a while BUT you can use a wash in 8 shampoo one immediately.

Thanks everyone. So many helpful suggestions. Just having you actually respond brought me comfort.

I think I'll wash my hair in the shampoo someone suggested but will leave the colouring for as long as I can bear. Lots of conditioner and argan oil.

Or is it the other way around?

Don't use henna on hair that has any dye it in. It will go green.

I had a nightmare. I was blonde and wanted to go darker. I read that I needed to pre pigment it with a pure red. So I did this. Added the Castings on top and it had no effect. Still red but now more purple read. Awful.

I used colour B4, this took me back to a gingerish shade. I then put a Castings on top straight afterwards. It worked fine but I would go for a lighter colour than normal as it does come out darker.

It took about four months to then get the colour I really wanted.

Colouring hair is a lot more complicated than people think, I'm not a hairdresser but my best friend is ... After listening to many of her stories I would go to a reputable salon & get a colour correction it may be quite costly but to keep stripping & Colouring it at home will damage the condition too.

Don't dye straight onto stripped hair, it will oxidise and go darker, even with an ash tone, and even after a week (just happened to me over christmas) after colour b4 I was left with gingery hair, it was very brassy at first, calmed it down with the purple shampoo someone else has recommended...I actually have grown to love my ginger shade, just did my roots after leaving it alone for about 2 months and it hasn't oxidised and gone darker....also deep condition lots after stripper as it dries it out. Hope any of that helps (rushed reply!)

Yes to fairy to try and strip colour off. Then lots of coconut oil overnight to condition.

I would then head to a local hairdressers for advice.

piratecat · 30/03/2014 17:19

i've put a light brown over colour b4, but have waited about 3-4 weeks beforehand.
