is there any escaping daily hairwashing?

I'm fed up of needing to wash and dry every day, is there any way to make your hair last longer between washing? I have very fine thin hair which easily looks lanky. I tried dry shampoo but doesnt seem to help much

I was stuck in a daily hair wash cycle, and have very fine hair (but volumes of it).

I now wash my hair twice a week, and it's definitely improved the general condition of my scalp too.

Agree with a lot of the different bits of advice.

I only shampoo the scalp with my fingertips, and let the lather rinse through the remaining length to clean it. I never put shampoo anywhere but the scalp.

In reverse I never condition the scalp or first few inches only the ends.

The rule for conditioner I've been told is no more than a 10p piece blob in your palm. If you rub these together in your palms it goes a long way.

I try once a week to let my hair dry naturally without heating up my scalp. I do this before bed, and then straighten in the morning. I've stopped using the straightners close to my head. I think the heat brings out the oils tbh, bringing the lankiness.

The condition will come back if to can try and prolong the washes and let your hair find it's natural oil level I think.

I used to wash everyday but after a couple of weeks I stretched to two days and now I can go three days with the help of batiste. Partly I think my scalp, hair has got used to it and also my hair is getting more grey.

I have a long bob and fiddle with it all day long.

For me, the only thing that worked was getting older... My hair gets far less greasy now, not sure if it's menopause hormones or the change in texture now there's much more grey in it.

Go on holiday? I find being in hot dry countries is great and I can go for days without becoming greasy whereas in England my hair has a 36 hour window. Or colour it? I used to be able to go two or three days bewteen washed when I coloured my hair!

(sorry no reasonable suggestions but looks like you've had a few of those already! Wink)

Some one on here recommended Hairfix to me and it is AMAZING. I have fine long hair and it gets greasy really really fast. The 3 step system has made a huge difference to my hair - am currently on day 3 and while I could have done with a wash this morning, it's not a total greaseball as normal.

There is a no lather release/clarifying wash then a shampo and a conditioner (special one for fine hair). Hair is soft, smooth and squeaky clean.
I only use the release once a week but the shampoo and conditioner are brill and I use them each time I wash my hair (along with one wash of PK itchy scalp shampoo).

Now a holy grail product for me - they do tester sizes so you can try it out before spending £££

I have this problem too, when I was pregnant and then breastfeeding I had gorgeous hair that I only needed to wash every 4 days!!! It never got greasy was glossy and beautiful. Now DS is a year I am back to grease monkey status and I HATE it. I also have a new job which requires a very early start for me and DS and washing and drying my hair on my work mornings isn't really feasible... Am also skint at the moment so buying expensive products which is usually my favourite pastime is not an option. However I just bought some Alberto balsam stuff that is bright green and dirt cheap and touch wood seems to be doing the trick!

Try just using conditioner on the ends?

I've just finished my first bottle of Liz Earle shampoo.

It was free and tbh didn't think it would be great for my fine hair as its for all hair types. However I've found it very good, my hair hasn't needed to be washed every day, it doesn't seem as greasy. I've just ordered another bottle and will see how it goes as, at the moment I think it's too good to be true.

I tend to think that the more you wash it, the more it needs washing - as if you stimulate the gease or something. Why not try for about 3 weeks, just washing every 2nd day, then every 3rd day and see if it becomes better once your scalp is used to that.

I find that too littlepeas - I much prefer my second day hair now! It's shinier and doesn't have that fluffy flyaway just washed texture.

Yes, I notice every now and then that my shampoo isn't really lathering (I uses SLS free ones so they aren't too lathery anyway). When this happens I do a double shampoo and it really does perk it up, hadn't thought about doing it regularly.

I also find that the part which gets greasiest is the lower back part of my head, which is also the hardest to get right to the roots with because of all the long hair covering it, so fingertips in for a good scrub there helps mine too.

A hairdresser once explained this to me! You need to shampoo twice, as the first one just gets it going, opens the pores up, etc where as the second one really cleans it. She told me something about the conditioner too, but I've forgotten that bit (I think it may have ben just using it from mid lengths down). I followed her advice and got my hair down from every day to every other day - it takes a little while to adjust, so you may feel a bit greasy on the second day for a week or so, but then it is fine. I actually prefer it on the second day now, as it is more manageable. I have fine, but voluminous, hair.

I noticed that my hair stays clean longer after the hairdressers too, I also noticed that they give it a damn good hard scrub with their finger tips.

So, I do too now and it does look nice for longer. I put a bit of conditioner near the roots too.

I also rinse and repeat.

Oh and make sure hairdressers aren't cutting loads of layers into it! They have a tendency to want to cut away half my hair, leaving the ends all thin and wispy Hmm Blunt cuts are better for fine hair. Hairdressers say layers will 'give it movement' but wtf does that mean? My hair moves fine, stop chopping all the thickness out of it!

Rant over.

That's all based on my experience with my own hair btw, which is fine and tends to go flat easily, but it's wavy and there's quite a lot of it. I never straighten it because that takes any volume out completely.

It's why mine is a past my shoulders mop and at well over 40 is staying that way.

If it's short it needs washing every 5 mins.

Less conditioner - just put it on the ends, or ideally don't use any in the shower, just use a few squirts of detangling leave-in spray. It makes a HUGE difference not having a heavy layer of conditioner over your fine hair. Companies convince us that conditioner is essential, but really it's only necessary if you have damaged or coarse hair.

Don't use a 'moisturising' shampoo or one for damaged hair - use something like Aussie Mega or a clarifying one so the hair's not weighed down. Don't add lots of product like heat protector, wax etc (obviously!)

Try washing it every other day and once your scalp gets used to that it won't be greasy on the second day. Probably.... it depends how fine the hair is and how greasy your scalp is. If it's very fine and straight and very greasy, then daily hairwashing is probably what's going to make it look its best.

I have also found that avoiding silicone has made a massive difference to how often I need to wash my hair. The downside is that my hair doesn't look as good as it used to when I used silicone. It is a dilemma - clean looking hair that doesn't sit as well, or dirty looking hair that sits quite nicely. What to do?

My other recommendation is, have you considered pregnancy? During my pregnancies were the only times in my adult life when my hair stayed clean and bouncy and fresh for days at a time. Bit of a drastic solution though Grin

Since I've started only using a tiny bit of conditioner on only the ends of my hair it really doesn't get greasy as fast.

Do you use conditioner all over your hair, or just on the roots?

I have fine hair and used to have to wash it every day, but kind of trained it out of that habit by using dry shampoo on the non wash days (I like the klorane one, the non aerosal version) and now only wash it every two days. I find it stays cleaner/less greasy for longer if I blow dry it (otherwise after around 36 hours it starts to look hideous) and I use the Bumble and Bumble volumising spray. Now it's starting to get to the point where it looks alright-ish on day 3! result!

We're about to get compulsorily water metered so I think rinsing for a super long time is going to get expensive Sad.

Eatmy - I will ask my hairdresser about the Kerastraight, see what she thinks, thanks.

Yes rinsing very well after shampooing and before conditioning and never let your get in bath water either.

I use the philip kingsley volumising spray which is pretty good too.
