Day 2 of stopping smoking after reading Allen Carr

Anyone else stopping who wants to chat / support each other? I read the Allen Carr book over the past couple of weeks and have now stopped. So far so good. I have stopped before (when pregnant mostly) but always ended up starting again when having a glass of wine, gradually smoking more and more and yet again I am hooked.

This time I want to never take another drag on a cigarette. As I am getting older, I am scared of the health implications and fed up with the cost. I find it much easier in the week as I don't smoke during the working day. Evenings are hard and weekends will be harder. DH is a heavy smoker so there is no avoiding thinking about it. That said, and I know it has only been 1 day, but I am actually not finding it too bad - feeling very positive so far as really am sick of being a smoker.

Hi rb32. What day are you up to now?? Yes I really feel we will beat it! If I can get through tomorrow that will be a big confidence boost.

Keep at it! Is it getting easier?

I had an interest experience if stopping 14 months ago. I had stopped three times previously for periods between 2-3 months.

The last time, I really changed attitude to smoking and put the whole idea of smoking behind me. I decided that I wouldn't think about it, and if the thought if it came into my head in any positive way, I would brush it away.

It worked for me and I've never wanted one since.

OP I think most of stopping is psychology. The nicotine is out of your system now.

Up to day 15 moogles, the third week! Getting easier? I suppose so, but like green has just said, alot of it is just in the head now. It's learning to do the things you always have done, but without cigs.

I gave up once before for 6 weeks using Champix - however , stupidly had an evening when smoked and it went to pot (figuratively - not weed Grin ) . I am reluctant to use Champix again as one of the reasons you should not use it is if you have suffered from depression ever, which I have. Luckily it didn't bring on a reoccurrence but I don't think I should have been prescribed it so don't want to again.

I would like to just give up , my mother did cold turkey and managed it . I know e-cigs are great , my friend now smokes nothing else , but I would like to try nothing at all.

My motivation , similar to a pp is that I am having lots of dental treatment for gum disease and smoking really does not help treating it.

If e-cigs are the way - I will do that.
I am told by my doctor that just cutting down from e.g. 20 to 18 to 16 to 14 etc after a few days in between is the way they find gets best long term results but I don't know anyone who has done it that way.
Does the Allen Carr book give you a real impetus ?

Sorry to ask a load of questions you have all probably been through ad nauseam before but I really want to give this a go .

Welcome triedb4! Well I'm three weeks in going cold turkey so can only comment from my experiences.....but I'm not sure about the cutting down slowly thing to be honest. The sooner you stop all nicotine and smoking, the faster you'll get over it. It's been really tough for me, might be better or worse for you.

I think I'm through the worst now, getting used to just doing things without fags. It feels like I'm trhough the phisical nicotine withdrawl and it's now just the mental battle to get over the habits and associations iyswim?

Read alan carr book once when I wasn't actually quitting so not sure what to take from that! Whichever way you do it, good luck!

The potential problem when cutting down little by little is if something really stressful happens then you're more likely to shoot back up to where you started from (voice of bitter experience!). OK there's a fair chance if the stressful even happens shortly after packing in smoking then you'll go back to it, but less of a chance than if you're still having the odd fag.

This Sunday completes 24 weeks for me, I cannot actually believe I managed this long Shock and if I can manage it anyone can Grin.

Feeling a lot better now apart from persistent cold(s), which someone mentioned on this thread earlier.
