Chance to win £250! New year, new skill? How about first aid? Share your thoughts with the British Red Cross NOW CLOSED

We have been asked by the British Red Cross to find out - in general - what new skills you're planning to learn or find out about in 2015?

They say "the new year is a time for thinking about learning something new in the year ahead. British Red Cross would like all mumsnetters to equip themselves with a new life skill in 2015 by learning first aid for baby and child - on a course, online or by downloading the free Baby and Child First Aid app".

So, what new skills are you planning to try and learn this year? If it's first aid, how will you learn this? How do you feel about learning new skills these days? What about your partner? How do you find the time to learn new things as you get older? Do you think it's important to do this?

If you're keen on finding out about learning some first aid skills - do check out the resources from the British Red Cross:

Courses info
Online materials
Free App

And let us know on this thread what you think.

Share your thoughts on learning new skills generally and any feedback on the British Red Cross first aid for baby and child info on this thread and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £250 John Lewis voucher.

Please add your comment by 26 January 2015. Standard Insight T&Cs apply

Thanks and good luck

To Learn Spanish, both for myself & to help my son with his homework

I used to be a childminder so had to go on first aid courses regularly. I find one soon forgets the basics and a refresher course or doing a multiple choice quiz helps to keep the skills and confidence up. I plan to refresh my skills this year

I've registered at work to complete a first aid course, it is a 3 day classroom based course, a skill that I think we should all have. A lot of training is now delivered online and so it is important to make time for practical skills such as first aid.

cluckyhen · 19/01/2015 09:32

I will hopefully be completing my CBT therapist course this year - I love learning new skills.

First Aid - I think everyone should be first aid trained and from a young age. I was in Brownies and then Scouting and my first emergency I was only 8 - having Basic First Aid skills then meant that whilst it was scary I was able to help, and we actually saved the man involved.

Older and wiser I have always kept up with the changes to First Aid and feel that it is the most important skill that everyone should know!

I'm determined to work out how my sons xbox works as he's constantly asking me to look at it. Trouble is I've no idea how it works. I'll trawl the internet for help and get him to show me the basics

pazanne · 19/01/2015 09:43

I would really like to do a first aid course and hopefully courses on Autism and challenging behaviour hosted by our local college

21Catherine21 · 19/01/2015 09:53

I had no idea there was an App, but now I do I will be telling everyone I know & I will book a First Aid course as I think it will be a confidence booster & I will try & persuade my hubby to do it too!
I have taken Spanish classes at Night school before & it is amazing how much fun learning something new is! Smile

tamalyn1 · 19/01/2015 09:59

as a carer for my son it would be great to do a first aid course, i will have to find out where they are held near me, living in a tiny village its quite difficult to get on courses i really want tho. i have downloaded the app which i am sure will be of great use. thanks

mummylonglegsme · 19/01/2015 10:01

I've completed a couple of your courses before, but think your app is an excellent idea. As for learning new skills, my husband and kids bought me a new blue electric guitar this Christmas, so I'm going to give them a performance to remember next Christmas, I'm practising every day to try and improve... ;-)

maisiesnan · 19/01/2015 10:20

stevecurtis · 19/01/2015 10:28

I have to do my fire marshall refresher course in 2015.

MadMonkeys · 19/01/2015 10:42

I did a baby first aid course a while ago, I probably should do a refresher course this year.

brocher · 19/01/2015 10:58

Making an effort this year on improving fitness and nutrition for my family & myself, small changes here and there, but a lot to learn on the nutritional value of food and creating healthy recipes that my family will enjoy.

lizd31 · 19/01/2015 11:14

I've never done a first aid course but I do know the basics if there was an emergency

becskiboo · 19/01/2015 11:25

This year is all about making my own things - first on the list sewing

montiefletcher · 19/01/2015 11:36

I think it is very important as a mother to have some basic first aid training, fortunately I have been able to do a first aid course at work. I would like to see some first aid info in the baby packs that you receive in hospital to give info.

baby890 · 19/01/2015 11:58

Just downloaded the app, looks fantastic. Love learning new things

This year my aims are mostly to do with healthy living! However I did a first aid course a few years ago through work and think its a fantastic thing. Before doing that I was really squeamish and lived in fear of being first on the scene at an accident. I used to drive on of the most notorious accident roads in the country every day to work! I decided to become a first aider at work in order to get the course paid for and face my fears head on. I'm still squeamish, but being armed with some knowledge is a great thing and its a shame its not part of the education process!

emmav6 · 19/01/2015 12:49

i'm learning with my son's how to grow different fruit & vegetables on our new allotment

babybat · 19/01/2015 13:48

I've done the Red Cross first aid training through work and found it really helpful - thankfully I haven't had to use it yet! I've decided to take up knitting in 2015, so that's going to be my new skill - am currently poring over books and needles!

jodiecrossley1 · 19/01/2015 14:06

I would love to refresh my first aid skills as it was quite a number of years a go that I did a course
