Secondary education

Chose private over state secondary - have we made the right decision??

We chose a large academic indie school over an outstanding cofe comp for our ds to start in Sept. DS is super bright and we have been given brilliant financial help from the school. Although I am sure he will get the best education at the school we have chosen; I have now started to worry about how he might mix with the other children (I am assuming many of them will be from priviledged backgrounds and we are an ordinary working class family who will struggle to pay even the very low discounted fees). I realise we are very lucky to have this opportunity, but can't stop myself from wondering if we should have just plumped for the comprehensive and stayed within our comfort zone!! I'd love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

Thanks everyone I really appreciate your input - isn't mumsnet brilliant?? I really feel much better about my decision now and DS can't wait to start.

We've just heard from the school regarding the transition from primary and the plan is first class! Head of Y7 will visit DS at primary after the easter hols then DS has a taster day with all the other pupils who are not currently at the prep, then a "getting to know you day" just before the break for summer with all the pupils in his form (fun activities etc).

DS only tried for this school as the schools in our area are not great to say the least and the only one we were happy with was way out of our catchment (the comp certainly isn't on our doorstep its over 20 miles away!) we really thought he wouldn't get in and when he did came the dilemma as we had already received the scholarship offer!!

I am certain now that we have made the right decision, DS never knew I was jittery about it and he is so excited its unreal, especially since he had a letter from the school addressed to him outlining all the visits etc. - that made him feel very grown up and special!!

Roll on September!!!!!! :)
