Hi everyone

Thought that as the 7th is fast approaching, it would be worth doing a thread to for the day and the build up.

Dd needs a B in anything to get into Uni and ds is getting his Nat5 results. Will be a tense morning.

I'm in Brillo! Glad that your DD is feeling more positive.

I think the 6th years in DSs school seem to just come and go from school rather than either studying at school or causing bother. DS1 did have some gaps between classes where he was stuck at school since we don't live locally. DS2s timetable even with just the 3 seems better. He either starts mid morning or finishes at lunch most days. 1 full day with I think a longer lunch as he has a gap. No library or common room though.

Go for it Brillo. DD1 is already angsting about whether she can cope with having to buy a dress for Leavers and they also have a Christmas Do. I have told her to make the most of it as if she gets us to buy her a winter and summer option she will hopefully have both options covered for Uni - have high hopes a social butterfly may eventually emerge.

Our school is in the centre of town and has very little spare space so the children are used to going outside premises from S1. The S6 tend to go home or frequent coffee shops etc rather than school in free periods. The drawback with that is the tendency for them not to bother to turn up at all if they have too much time off.

@Aurea Thanks - dd was quite stressed about the LNAT and didn't feel she'd done very well so was very pleasantly surprised at the result. She really wanted to go to Glasgow tho.

DD absolutely loved Modern Studies from S1 - and had a couple of great teachers who were enthusiastic and let the students have serious and wide ranging discussions. ( and didn't take offence when I said I thought it wasn't a real subject Blush )

Brillo
It takes a few days for the the shock to wear off and realise that other kids in her year are in the same boat!
But it sounds like she has a plan and now looking forward to 6th year

At dd's school they were all supposed to do 3 subjects PSE and an enrichment. DD started off doing 3 AHs but dropped AH biology and did an OU module instead. The enrichment was supposed to be work experience but she couldn't find any !

I do agree with Lidl - having worked in a school - youngsters with too much spare time tend to be a distraction to others so it needs to be made clear this won't be tolerated. For those motivated youngsters it can be very good discipline and gets them used to self motivating, self- directing and organising themselves which is all terrific practice for the independent learning required in higher education. DD matured significantly during S6 and was ready to cope with university

WaxOn - I'm intrigued that your dc's school does not ahve a library - my understanding was that library provision in secondary schools was a statutory requirement

Dd did 3 highers and an OU module. The OU module was more relevant to her decision of primary teaching so the deputy head said ok then. But they tried to encourage them to do 4 columns so they didn't doss about.

The DH was rather amused when Dd turned up for school one day with a blanket and pillow last June. As she pointed out. 2 of her choices didn't start til the Sept so she had one class all day. He suggested she consider going to work with me but she pointed out travelling to my work is complicated if you don't drive 😂

They have a room with library written on the door sign but it doesn't have any books in it, maybe that counts?

Not even that anymore Wax it's a Pupil Support Hub due to an ever increasing school role more teaching space was required so support spaces were rejigged. There is no legal requirement to have a library in a secondary school. Stirling council has systematically destroyed them recently. One school had their's reopened due to a charitable donation another has a thriving one due to HT being an English teacher to trade - they are the minority. Sadly.

Ah if only S6 pupils were as Wax described but then I have DDs who have verbal skits (and forget my occupation) and describe the coming and goings in glorious details and I have ears when S6 are "studying" outside my room Blush

I'm spoiled in that my previous S6 never opened his mouth. My current S6 is a bit more verbal but his time hanging about is limited as he has 3 days when he finishes at lunch time and two where he starts mid morning.

DD's school wanted all the kids to take 4 subjects unless they were doing 3 Adv Highers, and even then the preference was to take something else as well. Lots of kids did drop subjects throughout the year but i did read some research that said academic attainment was likely to be improved with a full/demanding timetable...

Senior phase thread suits me as I return to the joy of double jeopardy Sad DD3 S5 Highers and DD4 Nat5s . DD1 final year of degree and DD2 hoping to go from HND to 2nd year of uni. But eldest pair are adults (so they tell me) so I have to be content with what they deign to reveal...

That's a shame about the lack of library Wax, when I went there we had a lovely library with a full time librarian,. I spent a lot of time in there. I also enjoyed the flexible timetable in S6, I was doing double art portfolio class and used to go out " sketching" or " taking photos" all the time, quietly ditched one of my CSYS. Without telling DPs too. I was a bit distracted by my love life at the time😳

DD's school has agreed to request a re-mark for one of her AHs. She was predicted an A and got a C. It doesn't affect uni application so not priority but should hear by end of September. Anyone else?

I've seen DD's mark breakdown and the grade boundaries and she needs another 7 marks (out of 120) so not overly optimistic. What's strange is she did really well in the multiple choice but poorly in the written paper and assignment (she got 9/30 despite putting a lot of work in Sad.)
