Would you buy this house?

Found a house we want to buy, perfect in every way and exactly what we have been looking for. Backs on to open fields. We did a drive by before arranging a viewing and noticed that at the side of the house there was what looked to be a new access road, and when looking we could see diggers behind the house in the field.

We head home and did some digging and research online and there is about to be a development of houses built on that land directly behind the house by a Housing Association. 20 new dwellings. These dwellings are called 'affordable housing' and there will also be a play park and a pumping station built there too.

We are not so much put off by the open fields being occupied by houses but more the building noise and disruption that will be taking place and for how long? We don't know how long it could take to build them all and the affect it will then have on the area as it is now (which is lovely and quiet currently)

Would you give this a massive swerve?

Think long-term, not short-term. However, we looked at a property which we found out had planning permission and backed out. Often drive past and feels like ouse at the back is far too close and the other side of that there are views are a major employer's building. Our friends have been in their current property approx 20, the lovely hedgerow at the back of the property belongs to the land behind, but they've currently got houses going up the other side - the new house opposite has it's bedroom windows directly looking into theirs and they admit they'll sell as soon as development completed.

If part of the reason you’re attracted to the property is its peaceful location and open aspect, surely those things will be impacted long term by the construction of a housing estate?

Even if you can cope with short term noise and disruption, and the project is completed on time with no problems, and the council sticks to the agreed quota (and doesn’t start quietly extending permission for another phase and more houses), the location will be fundamentally changed. Depends if that’s a dealbreaker for you. It would be for me.

Swerve. We have a sewage pumping station in our road. It breaks down or the pipe bursts every year, and the road / everyone's gardens / ditches fill with raw sewage. Some unlucky people get it in their houses. It's that bad, our local MP is involved in trying to rectify the situation.

Holy crap! (pardon the pun) That sounds shit (pardon the pun) 😮

Well if I was undecided before then this has definitely made my mind up. Its going to be a swerve!!!

I hope you are not one of the ones who have had it in their houses but to be honest in the garden sounds grim enough. 😬

I'd let it go. If the council will permit 20, who's to say that in a few years they won't approve 200 more.

Find somewhere else is my advice.
