How much did your home renovation cost

We are considering buying a doer-upper for our first home but my husband seems to think it'll cost more than I do.
I'm estimating back extension and lift with general refurb ...£150- 200k.
Is this realistic?

Where do you live?
What will you be doing yourself?
What era is the house
Is it a terrace ? Or?
How many bedrroms/reception rooms etc?
It may be enough...or it may be woefully too little

I'm coming up to £80k and I haven't done an extension or loft (already exist). I have replaced the kitchen, reconfigured a shower room in to a bathroom, replaced another bathroom, had built in cupboards in bedrooms, redecorated throughout, re carpeted, moved washer/dryer upstairs. Four skips alone cost £1000.
The price of the kitchen and finishes can make an £100k project in to a £200k one, and how much work you are prepared to do yourself.
Loft I'd say £70k up, extension has too many factors to say.

It's a 3 bed terraced house, currently under 1000sq ft.
Loft conversion for fit in an extra bedroom and extending the kitchen out to get a larger kitchen diner with slidy doors like everyone is doing now.

Ours was underway by the time the price rises were coming in and the builder stuck to his original quote, however the jobs he hadn't started he ended up having to re-quote for as materials are going up so ours could have been an extra £20ish if we'd waited a few months.

ours no extensions or loft conversion replaced kitchen, carpets and decorated right through, rewired right through, decided on a stone patio instead of extension out back small garden new roof on the garage so far around £11500 but we are in West Yorkshire and a couple of the jobs were done at family rate rather than going rate

totally depends on size it cost me a but over £100k last year for similar but not including loft. add the c. 15% building supply inflation now and I think you would be nearer the 200 (if similar semi detached)

You might be able to get it done for that, but it depends what refurb means, kitchen? Bathroom? Windows? Flooring? Decorating? Electrics ?

You might be able to bring it in for less than 200 but that might depend on the quality of the materials you use to do the refurb.

We bought just under a year ago. 4 bed 60s end terrace..Not listed but on local register of architectural significance. North East. So far we have spent nearly £70k on:
Roof replacement £25k.
Asbestos removal £4k.
New central heating system £8k.
Knock down old separate bathroom and toilet to open up first floor and turn one of the 4 beds in to a bathroom £6/7k fittings.
Plastering £2k (mates rates)
Architect/planning/building control fees so far for single storey extension £6k.
Rent while house was uninhabitable £10k
Rest is labour, skips etc.

Painted walls ourselves as no decorators available. I'll wait to get someone to do woodwork and exterior.
Still to do: single storey extension to create living/bedroom, wet room and utility.
Kitchen (no point now as extension will attach to kitchen so will cause damage.
Re lay back yard, landscape front garden.
I daren't even think how much the rest will cost, if we could even get anyone to quote right now.
OP think very carefully about your budget and what you need to do, never mind want to do. It's easy to guess at the cost of big things, but it seems to be lots of little things that you can easily overlook (such as skip hire) or technical things you're unaware of that seem to play havoc with your plans.

It does strike me though if you wish to extend and also convert the loft this house isn’t suitable, it’s too small for what you want and need.

Get a builder round and get them to quote, but personally I’d be looking for a house that at least has enough bedrooms

South east - Hertfordshire/bucks borders

I think the reason we are looking to do the house up is because everything else that's larger is out of budget due to prices going up

Our architect estimated £40k to convert garage and refurb inside

All the builders quoted £75k

Total cost with all the kitchen bathrooms and decor etc £140k

Totally regret it and wish we’d just moved 🤣🤦‍♀️

It totally depends on the standard you are wanting - matching brickwork, sash windows etc or just blockwork and upvc and then the standard of kitchen you are wanting and how much you will do yourself or if you plan to move out for part of the the work and have a project manager.

We bought our house thinking maybe it would cost £100k to extend into the roof, then £200k after a few builders and architects had looked round. Final costs are going to be over £500k. (Other builders quoted much more at tender) Needed a small rear extension to get enough space upstairs, whole new roof, refitted throughout.

We bought ours in 2019 and are doing everything ourselves apart from electrics and plumbing (plus 3 new windows). Have done a new bathroom and boiler (10k), plastering everywhere, decorating etc, made downstairs open plan and we are about to finish the kitchen which is costing about 15k. All in once we're finished (need to put new floors downstairs and stair carpet) I think we'll have spent about £35k, which is about 1/5 of what we bought it for (in cheap part of the NW).

Mine cost around £110k, no extension, no loft conversion, but walls being knocked down and steels put in, new kitchen and bathrooms.

That was a few years ago though - I think prices have gone up a lot due to Brexit. I had a builder round this week to quote for something and he said even scaffolding costs more now.

We've just been quoted between 130k and 180k to extend the kitchen/diner and extend one room upstairs (not as extravagant as going into the loft) so I think you'd be over the 200k mark with what you're looking for. But I could be wrong!!
