4+, 5+, 7+ madness 2015 - who's going to join me?

Following on from the 2014 thread, I've decided to name change and start a new one for 2015: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/primary/a1905744-3-4-5-7-support-thread-2014

My dd will be sitting assessments for 3 schools in the coming months. I've tried to 'tutor' her myself, but in reality it's a half hearted attempt (from both of us!)

I'm hypocritical in the sense I'd really like her to go to 2 of the 3 schools; but do feel guilty trying to 'prepare' her, when I can see she's not at all interested in pencil control, shapes etc.

I'm going to give it our best shot through relaxed, play based learning and then see what happens on the day.

Anyone else or am I the only one?

21st November is what I heard. That date may depend on when your assessment was though.

Nothing yet from shhs

Me neither. Dh now says they are posting the letters today, not that we would hear today, so the wait continues!

Oh really! When I asked when they would be contacting the current nursery they said from the 24th.

Pendleburymum · 21/11/2014 16:35

apparently they only contact the nursery of those through to second round so 24th would make sense if they are posting the letters today ..

Got our letter today and its a rejection. Rather disappointing but I guess not surprising as we made absolutely no attempt to prep dd (I don't think it is right in a child so young). It just leaves us with ever shrinking options..

Rejection for us too. Note saying not quite ready but to apply for 7+

Anyone sitting 7+ for NLCS or Habs in Jan 15? Would be good to catch up on prep. My DD is from a state primary.. anybody here who is preparing their child for these schools?

We are also preparing DS2 for his 7+ in January, although not in London/South so not for any of those schools.

However I believe the prep is similar. We haven't done NVR yet, but we are going through tables (2, 5, 10 and 3, will want to cover 4 as well) then some comprehensions, and general maths books. We are doing probably about 15-20 minutes per day. Writing is definitely not great, but we are not managing a lot of that at the moment.

Ought to perhaps step it up a bit, but don't want to hothouse. I wonder what others are covering??

Hello everyone..glad to have come across this thread.

Can I please request some feedback for Northwood College and NHEHS? I understand they are not as great as NLCS and HABS, but wanted to understand if it is worth considering them. DD can not write her name and not sure if she will talk as much as she does at home during the assessment.

Thanks!

Can someone please clarify whether the schools tell you if your child has a chance to go on a waiting list or is it just a rejection or acceptance letter throughout?

Thanks

If you do not receive a firm offer, most schools will 'offer' a Waiting List place or it will be an outright 'no'.

As others have said above, if they are not quite ready at 4+ or it is simply the wrong school for them, there is always a chance to reapply when older.

What kind of person would want their child to deliberately be put in a situation where they were struggling to keep up?? Everyone learns better when they are happy!!

Hi. Can I just trawl for advice for 7+ 2016. A while a way I know. But what will be required of us parents to support dc in this? Will the prep school do everything or will we have to do extra in the evening? And if so, are there books or suggestions etc? Thanks!

Private school letters are very clearly yes / waiting list / no - waiting list letters will often give some idea of a date by which you are likely to hear.

Hello. My DD is sitting the 7+ at Ken Prep. I just wondered what to expect and if you have any advice / experience?
I've absolutely no idea what she should be capable of. I've got the 6-7 Bond papers but fear she should be level 7-8 perhaps. I'm going to work through these with her over the coming weeks.
Genuine thanks in advance.

There seems to be some confusion as to the 4+ etc thread.

I was asked today which is the "official" one!
Of course there isn't an official one.

However this isn't the thread I started and since lack of time will prevent me from replying on both threads, I shall only be checking the thread I started.

Good luck to all those taking the assessments Flowers

Probably best if posters stick to this thread. It's been running longer and has far more posts.

Sanam2010 we have to keep our hopes up and believe. I'm taking it step by step with my preparations as I don't want her too feel pressured and dislike the things she used to enjoy naturally like puzzles and colouring. Wish I could just know if she got in already.
