How much tax will I pay on SMP?

Hi! I’m going on Mat Leave on Monday and I’m due a total of £8,861.27 for my 39 weeks paid, one of these is a big payment of £2058.01 and I’m not sure how much tax I’ll pay on my payments? I get around £750-£820 the other payments and the benefits calculator says I’m entitled to UC but I’m aware I may not actually get anything when the time comes and I’m worried about how to afford bills and food x

Hi
there is a calculator you can use to work it out on the gov website. Just google ‘maternity pay calculator’ x

You will pay some tax on the first payment of 2000.

You shouldn't pay tax on the SMP only months. Depending on how much you have earned over the tax year, you may get a tax rebate some months.

NI and pension may still be deducted.

What have you earned since beginning of April already and will you earn anything between going back from mat leave and end of March 2025. You need to add that to your mat pay and then you can work it out. If it’s less than £12,750 you’ll pay nothing with a bit of noise around NI. If it’s over £12,750 then you’ll pay 20% over that level as per normal.

That’s what I used to work out what I’d be getting! I didn’t realise that automatically takes tax into account? Is that the case and what’s on there is what I’ll get after tax? X

It’s the gross amounts you need to add together btw. Ie your pay pre tax
