Few "religious" concepts have caught the imagination quite so much as the angel. I wonder why it is such a popular idea, even amongst the most rational and agnostic, that we have guardian angels watching over us? I suspect it may be that many people find the idea of an omnipotent and omniscient God too overwhelming and threatening. God inevitably is associated with judgment and the "reward" of the afterlife, making many people feel uncomfortable and threatened.
Angels, on the other hand, are perceived not as judges but as helpers and protectors who watch over and care for us regardless of whether or not we deserve their care.
And yet... what a silly idea. We - most of us - intellectually accept the concept of a supernatural being beyond the rules of the universe, usually referred to as God. Yet we think that He needs assistants to do his work. What a contradiction!
Or is it...?
When our children fall and hurt themselves, who runs to their aid? God? A guardian angel? No, it is us, their parents, who protect and help them. Who was it who led the way to modern nursing in the hell of the Crimean War with a stern manner and a loving hand? An angel? No, it was ordinary human Florence Nightingale. Whose endless patience and integrity led to the peaceful downfall of a hateful regime and the end to the vile philosophy of apartheid? Not an angel, but Nelson Mandela, human.
So if you get a chance to be someone's angel, then take it and be a messenger of God. And if you feel like walking on air... that's just the wings kicking in.
