The secret/Law of attraction... Does it really work?

Hi,

At a bit of a crossroads. Life hasn't really taken me where I want to be & I feel a bit of a failure and somewhat disappointed. I want to try & change this and was thinking of reading "The secret" and trying to follow it. I just don't want to be left extremely disappointed. It seems like you need to think positively all of the time & i'm not sure how realistic that is? Am I correct in thinking you need to believe what you want is already yours, and act & feel like you would if you had it? Any examples/tips of how to do it, and if you practice it, how has it worked for you?

I'm also a Christian, well I attend Church a couple of times a month & I believe in God (although I sometimes find myself doubting Blush) So, is the universe & God supposed to be the same thing?

So the scientific community needn't bother developing drought resistant crops or vaccines and should just concentrate on developing LOA manuals that they can just air drop into the poorest parts of the world. They'd save a fortune!

I do believe it exists. However I think it's very easy to misinterpret and often the books trying to explain it make it seem as easy as just "think positive" as people have said if it was as simple as that we would have no problems in the world.

It's a universal law that is taught about in various esoteric groups such as rosacrucianism or freemasonry

It pretty much fits with Jesus teachings in the bible "ask and believe that you have received" "as a man thinks in his heart so is he" tbh I found nothing that contradicts the Christian faith though obviously Christians applying it consciously are more likely to call it faith and trust in God than "law of attraction"

People who believe in it alone rather than as a part of their faith will usually understand it in this way:

Everything holds a vibration, our emotions are different vibrations for instance joy or gratitude is a very high vibration and guilt or depression would be much lower vibrations. Our thoughts and beliefs influence our emotions and in turn that's why they have the power to change our vibration.

The belief in law of attraction is that you attract things which match your vibration, or rather you attract things that you vibrationally match (one person may feel great about money, another may find money a hassle and therefore to them money is a lower vibration) so basically lower vibrations your going to attract more things you don't particularly want or higher you'll attract more things you do. But the vibration is the sum of the subconcious belief (which is perhaps translated as heart in the bible)

There's often a time delay, most people don't experience instant manifestations, thus we usually have a mix of good and bad going on in our lives regardless how positive we are thinking but we can definitely influence our experience through our thoughts

And sometimes it's as simple as changing the way we perceive something alters our experience but the actual facts that happen dont change - for instance,

Fact: my child was rushed to hospital with life threatening illness

My experience using loa consciously: gratitude for paramedics, NHS, nurses, doctors, medicine, my child improving fast as a result of this, my child is well again

My partners experience not using it:
Anger that child is suffering, anger that we've had to go through yet another trial, fear that child will suffer again long after child is recovered

It was the same event experienced in two starkly contrasting ways... But we both attracted the experience we received by our thoughts and beliefs about the situation

my partners experience not using it

But the outcome was the same, your child got better, your partners frustration didn't stop the child getting better so you both received the same result regardless of feelings. It sounds like it's just about looking on the bright side and having resilience in the face of adversity which is nothing woo.

There was a very good episode of the infinite monkey cage on radio4 where they debunk a lot of the misunderstandings around quantum physics. Really interesting if you can find it online.

I really don't think it's anything more than "The Power of Positive Thinking" dressed up in a new suit.

Developing your self-confidence, changing your habits from negative to positive, visualising success, "fake it til you make it" stuff - those are all good things to do, because you are able to directly influence yourself and others, and therefore things that rely on a human decision can be changed by it. EG you visualise yourself asking for and receiving a pay rise, you practice exercises to make you feel more confident. Therefore in the meeting you appear more confident and show that you believe in your worth. Your boss may be influenced by this and award you your pay rise.

However, things that have no human decision making as part of their process that you can influence - no, just no. It's not going to stop raining because you ask the Universe to manifest some sunshine. Cancer can't be reversed by just thinking really hard about a cure (although thinking positively will hopefully make your experience less frightening.)

The outcome was the same for our child. I don't believe we can have an effect on others experience, only our own. I can't make my child get sick or get better directly (by law of attraction, obviously I'm not talking about treatment)

Did my stance help my child believe everything would be ok? Maybe
Did my partners cause my child to be fearful? Maybe
Did I attract awesome positive people around us during this time? Maybe

It's just not as simple as causing something to happen or not, there are too many variables and maybes

However, my experience was positive about the situation and I feel very grateful and feel a lot of awesome things have happened since using loa such as money windfalls we've needed to help us through

My partners was incredibly traumatic and required counselling

OsloGin was it this episode?

Oh yes! Well done for finding that hilary I'd assumed it was long gone.
