Scones - This is a very forgiving recipe.
Preheat oven to 220 degrees C
2 cups of flour
4 teaspoons of baking powder
Pinch of salt
Sift these into a bowl (get your child to tip the cups into the sieve)
50g of butter
Rub this into the flour (the fun part - mostly this means throw flour everywhere, but eventually they get the idea)
If you want cheese scones, add some grated cheese at this point, the amount is irrelevant. Inevitably a large amount always goes down the sluglets mouth before it reaches the bowl.
Alternativly you could add a tablespoon of sugar and rasins/dried apricots/dates/whatever's lurking in the cupboard.
Use a knife to mix the flour mixture with enough milk to make a sticky dough. It should be a little under a cup, it depends on the weather conditions believe it or not.
Roll or pat it out to about half an inch deep. (sticky little fingers moment) Add more flour if it's too sticky. Cut into squares and put on a greased baking tray.
Cook for ten to twelve minutes - just enough time to clean up the mess in the kitchen and on the child. When they come out of the oven, put the kettle on. By the time you have made a cup of tea or coffee they will be cool enough to split, butter and eat. Marmite on cheese scones is the favourite in our household, but they have to be hidden from dh who will scoff the lot given half a chance.
