What house could you buy where you live for £160,000?

We're thinking of selling our house. After having a look at a few in our price range I am bit dissapointed - would probably have to spend £200,000 to get what I want.

£160,000 is our price range but all we can get is ver small 3 bed semi or a run down victorian terraced house. Nothing stunning. Very average. Certainly nothing in the 'desirable' areas of town for this price range.

We're in Harrogate. Would be intersted to see what we could get for our money in other ares of UK.

South Norfolk:
pretty 2 bed cottages
2/3 bed bungalows

In East Manchester at the moment, that would buy you a large detached house with all the extras! I say 'at the moment' because....
3 bed semis, drive/gardens/extended etc, went for 30k in the first 3rd of 2004, 60k in the second 3rd and they now sell for 80k plus .

160,000 would get you a small 2 bedroom period property with some work needed in York (at least in the area where I live, though for a 3 bedroom victorian terrace you can't expect to pay less than 220,000). For 160,000 you can also get a one bedroom flat. Or maybe a 3 bedroom ex-council house in very good condition.

PS. But you may be surprised how much your house has increased its value and find that you can easily offer more than 200,000 for your next house..

Not very much at all, we're in cambridge. £160,000 would probably get you a 1-2 bed,terrace, or very small 1 bed semi. Maybe a 2 bed flat, but not in great areas of town.

In Cambridge I would imagine you would get a flat or 2 bed terrace in need of work perhaps? Here in the town I live (1/2 hour from Cambridge) it would probably get you a nice 3/4 bed semi detached. This is what our house is but it needs a lot of tender loving care and money invested before we could ask for that amount.

Ours is about 25 mins outside cambs, it's a 3 bed, fairly spacious but also small, semi detached, not in a very nice area either. Get this, we paid £170,000 for it.

Free paper just came. £157K small 3 bed semi on 80s estate.

Only got 1 estate agents details & they go from £136K 2 bed semi on older new estate, to £180K 3 bed detatched (but only detached by about 6 inches). Only that 1 house in between.

25 mins out? do you mean the city centre or just getting to the sign that tells you the name of the place? If we are going by the sign then we live upto an hour away!

Our house is ex housing association too so immediately earns its bad points! We have a fantastic garden though, with some hard graft it could sell very well to a family.

My old house (2 bed vict. end terrace) with ex-DH was 30 mins walk into the centre and we paid £145,000 about 3 years ago . . . just goes to show the market now!

Estate agent guide prices are often 10 - 15% higher than the actual sale price, and in Scotland much lower than sale price.

If you go to Nethouseprices.com you can see what houses in your area actually sold for. It doesn't tell you anything about the house other than the address, so you probably need a bit of local knowledge as well.

For a lot less than £160k you could get a very nice terrace or semi around here in a "good" area... but to get detached with 2 receptions 3/4 bed, or any of the older "character" full houses, you'd have to pay £30k more at a bare minimum.

Ameriscot - that is my husband's new favourite website. He's very excited that they're updating our local info to include the 2001 and 2002 (or something like that) soon.

He's a bit obsessed by it and has all the data in a spreadsheet searchable by price/location/something I forget. In his defense, we are looking at houses!
