What house could you buy where you live for £160,000?

We're thinking of selling our house. After having a look at a few in our price range I am bit dissapointed - would probably have to spend £200,000 to get what I want.

£160,000 is our price range but all we can get is ver small 3 bed semi or a run down victorian terraced house. Nothing stunning. Very average. Certainly nothing in the 'desirable' areas of town for this price range.

We're in Harrogate. Would be intersted to see what we could get for our money in other ares of UK.

I'm in Harrogate

One bedroom starter home in a modern estate, a 2-b ex-council, or run-down railway cottage.

Thanks Secur. They're not really my cuppa tea though.

£160K would get you a two bed terrace here, in the posh part of Warrington (yes, there is) where we are all lay-dees

Our house is in a desirable part of Leeds (a village just outside) and is worth about £160.00/£165.00. It is a 3 bedroom semi with quite good gardens. Some loft have been made into a 4th bedroom so it is quite spacious.

northerner · 20/01/2005 13:47

Secur I am looking for a newish 3 bed semi with a garage and a garden. One that does not require a new kitchen, new windows or fumigating!

In our bit of Surrey, £160k wouldn't get you any kind of house. Looking through this morning's Property Weekly - god knows why, as we're hoping to exchange on our new house today! - that amount would get you a one-bedroom flat in a nice-ish part of town. For any kind of house, I think you're now looking at £180-190k min, God knows how anybody lives here.

SenoraPostrophe · 20/01/2005 13:51

A small villa with pool, or a 4-5 bed house.

chocfreeclary · 20/01/2005 13:52

we're in a nice residential bit of Derby (nice schools, quiet, trees, parks)
Our tatty 3-bed 30s semi is worth ca£180k; I guess for £160k you'd get a much smaller, maybe more modern (but not modern enough iyswim) 3 or perhaps 2 bed semi.

Bozza · 20/01/2005 13:53

70s 3 bed semi with garage.
Period 2 bed weavers cottage.

Actually newbarnsleygirl we're only 15 mins drive from Barnsley and a 4 bed detached with garage (next door to us, slightly smaller than ours) is up for £219,950. Not selling, mind you.

Bozza · 20/01/2005 13:54

Oops forgot to say we're in a smallish village near the M1 and in the Huddersfield-Wakefield-Barnsley triangle.

I had a look on the estate agents website that we got our house from so they were genuine prices. There were also a couple of apartments with 3 beds.
I think it depends on the area as there is a 3 bed semi with a small garden on the same street as my MIL which is up for £150,000 but it's a well sought after area as it's near the hospital.
Where abouts are you Bozza?

You'd get a one bed flat here. or maybe an old public toilet to convert!!

bundle · 20/01/2005 14:14

you'd get a studio appt where we live!

marialuisa · 20/01/2005 14:16

Umm, if you went to Tranmere/Birkenhead North you could buy about 3 victorian 3-bed terraces with yards for that much.

Or you could buy a 3 bed 1970s semi with garage in Oxton/Prenton (nice bits of Birkenhead-they do exist)with good schools. here

lunavix · 20/01/2005 14:21

v small ex council 2 bed terrace... if you are lucky.
In fact, I think that'd be a bit more...

Grommit · 20/01/2005 14:23

Berries · 20/01/2005 14:33

Potty1 · 20/01/2005 15:03

FineFigureFio · 20/01/2005 15:26

or newish dated terrace 2 bed

suedonim · 20/01/2005 16:56

Modern 3/4 bed detached or small 2 bed traditonal cottage. I'm in Aberdeenshire.

Gem13 · 20/01/2005 17:00

Nothing here. 2 bed Victorian terraces are about £220,000 East of Brighton. We are old but I don't know how any young people manage it these days (help! need to find that 'turning into my mother' thread)
