How much do you tip the hairdresser?

I never know how much to give my hairdresser and find the whole thing very embarressing. If I have colour and cut & blow dry, it costs £80 (don't tell DH!), and I give £5 to the actual hairdresser and £2 to the junior who washes it. So nearly 10% in all. Is this reasonable? What do you do?

Have a new hairdresser, he IS fabulous. Properly brilliant.

If I have a trim with him it is £17, I give him a £20 (£3 tip).

If it's a wash, cut and blow (£34), then I round it up to £40 (£6 tip).

He charges £10 for a cut for DD, I don't tip for her cuts because she has her hair done in the same week as I do so he will have already had a hefty tip from me that week [stingy northerner emoticon]

depends if I have any cash,sometimes a fiver sometimes nothing,I like to keep them guessing!

I hate this and never really know what to do. Atleast in restaurants you can leave tip on the table or add to bill. I usually don't tip for my hair as cost of highlights and cut is very expensive and I think should cover the cost of the shampooist etc. However, by the time somebody has finished with DS's hair I feel they deserve a drink so usually tip about a fiver.

£10 to hairdresser for £55 cut and blowdry as I'm always very happy. Same to waxer. Couple of quid to junior and I always give it to the cashier to sort out, unless the actual person is standing there.

BTW, my mum used to own a salon (a little one, never made much money) and could never understand why she never got tipped. She actually earned less from the business than she paid her senior staff, but couldn't afford not to have them, IYSWIM.

Tipping is for good service. Cab driver often own their cabs but we still tip them...

I had my hair cut on Saturday - the hair dresser spent the whole time talking to her mate that had "popped in". The only thing she saud to me was "how much do you want off" and "is that ok" so she can stuff her tip where the sun don't shine!

I only started going to the hairdressers about 2 years ago and tip 20% (might not if I was not happy with the cut, etc)

Am afraid I have never tipped any hairdresser! Have someone come to house for years who is more like a friend by now so would feel a bit embarressed anyway.

I find this hideously embarrassing, so mostly I don't bother. I would be easier if there was a cup by the till like at restaurants. Its bloodly expensive enough anyway.

tbh I don't, have thought about it and have a couple of times given my mobile hairdresser an extra £1 or so when I've felt like it but I am of the I work really hard and I never get tipped...think the bosses should pay them more really...although would occassionally

Now I find I just tip the shampooist as he is an adonis who does the best head massage!!

i never know what to do,i've been a waitress and tips just lets the boss get away with paying rubbish wages but also i know how much i needed the tips.so no, i never know what to do

I have just started going to a new hairdressers at the new Spa over the round from where I live. First hair cut in a year too But I don't tip the hairdresser. It has a really nice way of paying too, as you don't pay int he salon - but at the Spa reception, where the staff aren't there. Tips are not expected there at all, and it is sucha refreshing chaange.

Lovely salon too - has big bar, with long menu and cocktails too - very relaxing experience. Think I may go again, sooner than 12 months this time!!!

How do you tip the shampooing guy? normally is the hairdresser who charges you and I find a bit embarrasing to leave a simmilar tip to both (though I think the shampooing guy really deserved a good one he was taking a class of Indian head massage and it was GREAT!!!)
