Just wondering if anyone else is / has studied with the Open University. I've just started A103 (arts foundation course) and am about to apply to Summer School. I really want to go, but am not looking forward to being without dd for a whole week! And also not sure whether dh is up to looking after her alone for a whole week! Has anyone else been to a OU Summer School and survived? Love to hear from you.

You are eligible for a free place if you earn under 11000 (if you have one child) 13000 (for a second child) and a grand more for each subsequent child. If you receive working families tax credit and have an NHS exemption certificate then you are entitled also. You do have to provide proof of income. We won't be able to claim another free place as our income has risen recently but it still won't be easy finding the money, I will need a loan. The system for loans is incredibly confusing though. Anyone else struggling with the loan paperwork?

I am not doing a course through the OU but am studying a masters course distance learning. I work 30 hours a week and have 4 children. My main problem is being on mumsnet when I should be concentrating on writing my assignments

mears,
How do you do it ????
I spent five years doing post grad. studies & working full time, but in those days I did not have DH or the boys to think about.
Well done!!!
A year ago I thought of doing more studying, but told DH to shoot me if I tried !!!

More like 'why am I doing it?' when I am stressed getting an assignment in. My dh is very helpful but gets pi**ed off when he finds me on mumsnet when I am supposedly studying. Have just submitted one by the way so have a couple of weeks off till the next one starts.

All I can say is that I really amdire you lot.

I'm not working at the mo (recently became SAHM who is in the throes of a complete career turn around), so if you can study, raise a family AND work at the same time, I should stop whinging and get on with it.

Tx again and good luck

I meant admire - not amdire(which could be seen as self-criticsm!)

Gwynie
have you asked OU if you can register this year? They are usually really helpful in rushing things through at the last moment.

DH has taken the children out to do the supermarket shop (wow!) while I do some work on my next essay (double wow!)

I am really struggling to get on with it though. My mind is wandering, I am daunted by the enormous amount of work and effort I need to put in to get it finished and I feel as though the course I have taken on is too much.

Is anyone else feeling the same?

How can I make myself knuckle down and get on with it?

Hilary, your not alone, I'm currently trying to finish second TMA - house is spotless, ironing done and found lots of intresting(!!!!!) things on internet, not getting much TMA written though!
Every time I seem to get on a roll and start writing something coherent ds2 wakes up or hubby starts asking about something! Sorry can't help with any motivational tips, I think you just have to accept that sometimes your work isn't up the the standard you'd like, but its the best you could do at the time.

Wow, you were quick to reply - we are sidetracked, aren't we?

I have discovered that my avoidance tactics and lack of drive afflict me as much at 26 as they did at 16 when I did my GCSE's and have done at every academic stage inbetween. Will I never get myself sorted?

Hi Hilary and Nettie

I too am an OU student (well sort of distracted at the moment). I should also be getting down to some study - but am having to prepare for a reintegration meeting for my ds (who has won his right to go back to school) and the meeting is at 4.00pm this afternoon - I'm a bit nervous, but determined to make sure that everything goes well for him. So the OU studies are taking a bit of a back seat - but must get down to it as got two TMAs to do. But it's amazing just how clean the house can get

I wouldn't mind nearly so much if the house was tidy!

Can I join the skivers club? Wasn't going to do something this year, got carried away after passing last year's exams and signed up to something I'm not remotely interested in! Was going to cancel about a week before 1st TMA due in to be told I'd lose all my money so had to start course. Well, I say 'start', did last TMA in a hurry and haven't opened my books since. Next one due in a fortnight - still just sorting out what I need to read, sharpening my pencils, organising a study timetable etc. Got exam dates through yesterday!!!!!!!

Well its 10pm Friday night and its finished,in the envelope and ready for posting! Hows everybody else getting on? What's everybody studying. I'm in my third year, done 2 health related courses and am now doing social policy: power, welfare and diverity. Hoping to have a degree in social policy in a few more years. Well I'm of for a well deserved glass of wine now.

Had a good couple of days with it but have lapsed for a couple more. Got a tutorial in the morning though so that should kickstart me again.

This is an english literature course, last year I did an education one and before that a religious studies one. Hoping to get this degree done by the time the kids are at school, then train as a children's nurse.

Hi everyone I'm struggling to find a suitable course that will get me to where I want to be. I want to counsel and advice mothers (young mothers) on being a mother and help with the early stages of parenthood. But I don't want to be a social worker and I don't want to be a health visitor, so I've gone for DD100 Social Sciences. Its got nothing really to do with motherhood and counselling but its the closest I can get without going off on some very precise and direct course that I may regret. Has anyone else got similiar aspirations or are going to attend this course?

And another OU mum checking in here - though I finished my degree a few years ago.

I started OU when dd2 was 3 months old, and dd1 2 1/2. Took me five years, but it was so good for me as it kept me sane and stopped me from thinking there was no life outside nappies and breastfeeding! Didn't go to summer school for the first year as dd2 was still b/feeding, but from the second year on I went every year and absolutely loved it!

After five years hard slog, by which time both dd's were at school, I achieved a first class honours degree, which lead to some postgraduate research work. After this I did a PGCE and am now a secondary science teacher - none of this would have been possible had it not been for the OU.

Hi everyone

I recently applied to do an OU course, A103, Humanities Level 1 and don't know quite what to expect. I'm hoping at some point to go into teaching but want to keep my options open. How do you find it fits in with your life?

Bekki

I am planning on going into the same profession as yourself and I picked Level 1 Health and Social care and plan on adding until I get the diploma.

I am also working as a volunteer for Homestart, so maybe you could get 'hands-on' experience and that will help.

Also forgot to say, why do you not do a course linked to counselling?

I must admit I didn't look at Social Sciences so that maybe more appropriate for your situation, but just a suggestion
