I bought ds a monkey whe still pg with him. This monkey has been everywhere with us. He's made bit of a comeback in recent weeks as I'm again pg, and he's been really mad about hearing how i bought Ba, the monkey when he was in my tummy, and then i got ds2 Kanga when he was i my tummy & now there's a new baby in my tummy etc etc.

He had his 1st ever dentist visit today & Ba came & was great. Ds war really scared, so Ba sat on his knee, dentist was really good & checked Ba's teeth etc. straight after, we went to a playground & ds was going down the slide with Ba, then must have forgotten & wandered off. We realised Ba was missing, searched high & low, but he's gone.

I was so gutted. Honestly i don't usually cry, but definitely pg hormones here, I have cried on and off all day about Ba. (Once I start I can't stop) He's been there for every big moment, when ds had his op a couple of months ago Ba went into theatre with him. Every plane ride & trip away, Ba has come. Ds is coping quite well, I said I'd phone & check the lost property in a couple of days, so I guess he's hanging onto that. We're flying to Uk on friday & we've already discussed Ba coming on plane as usual. I am so upset it's rediculous.
So- any tips on helping ds (& me!) cope with the loss?

And a real outside chance - anyone bought a monkey in Ikea about 4 years ago that they still have. Obviously Ikea don't make it anymore. He was about 30-40cm long with a blank expression and straight black line of stitching for mouth. Light brown sort of fleecy material with beige face & paws & tail with knot in end. It wouldn't be the same anyway, and I know it's an impossible one.

Thanks again everyone. Ds is still thrilled. He spent a lot of time last night introducing Ba to "Noddy" and "Sweety Pincher" the 2 new monkeys his grandparents bought him while in UK. Apparently it is also Ba's birthday next week. I went shopping yesterday for a cake & he chose a bright pink Disney princess one with tiara & necklace etc. Apparently Ba is a girl now, mother to noddy the monkey, so who am I to argue???

Issymum - that's a lovely story. My best friend is hoping to adopt - court hearing next week. I'll pass that on to her.

Lizs - yes, i have to say I was very disappointed we hadn't got Ba back, because things always seem to be handed in here. I lost ds's glasses in the street when we first moved here (he lobbed them out of the pushchair without me noticing) and I got them back via the town lost property the next week. Dh has so far left his wallet, mobile, briefcase, coat & travel card all at different times, on the train, and he's got them all back. Our name is known in lost property offices throughout the country!

Hi janh - I was just thinking of you yesterday - this probably isn't the place, but briefly, we ordered it just before we left , so end July, they estimate 3 months, so hopefully we'll get it end October, so just before baby comes. We've got the Peugeot 807. the 3l engine had 'f' energy rating & 15l of petrol for 100km, so we've opted for the diesel 2.2l which has 'a' energy rating with 9l per 100km. Only neg. thing is it's a maual & I've spent the last 3 years with an automatic. Now going to have to get used to a manual, & learn to change gears with my right hand. Getting leather seats & sat. nav. Looking forward to it - esp the electronic slidey door.

Oh, monkey, I am so pleased you have got him back - especially with the timing, coming back from visiting family, birthday etc -

(But tell me about the CAR! Have you got it yet?)

Gem13 · 13/08/2003 18:26

monkey - fantastic news!!!!

SoupDragon · 13/08/2003 18:24

Sammac, seeing you mention "chickenpops" reminds me that DSs have "Cocoa Pox" for breakfast

Hope your DS is better soon...

outofpractice · 13/08/2003 18:23

What a happy ending! Also interesting to hear from Issymum that her baby is not fooled by lookalikes. In a way, the whole point of the special favourite toy is that it is unique, anyway.

sammac · 13/08/2003 18:19

MOnkey
I'm so pleased that Ba is back.
Thank you for starting this thread, it's a good idea for the future.
Thanks again to Bear for the other Ellie. Sadly today ds has come out with chickenpops, just in time for me returning to work tomorrow!!( after 7 weeks holiday) Timing or what!! Any way, granny is looking after him and big sis for the next 2 days and he is away with 2 Ellies. Old Ellie still wins the battle, cos he sucks her trunk- nuff said! But he still carts new Ellie too. I think what Issymum said is true about the original still being the best, but it helps to know there's a back up.
Wecome back Ba

LIZS · 13/08/2003 18:15

Monkey,

So pleased Ba has turned up. ds would be devastated to lose his Dog Dog or Mrs Moo (no prizes for guessing what they are!). Nice example of Swiss honesty I wonder ?

SoupDragon · 13/08/2003 18:13

Give them a good chew then, Coddy!

codswallop · 13/08/2003 18:12

i tried that with ds1s finnish rabbit. he dislikes the new ones fluffy ears. his one has mangled rough ears!

SoupDragon · 13/08/2003 18:10

Hurrah!!! I'm so relieved!

Issymum, that's lovely . I'm always astounded at how children can tell, even if the original "It" has been washed and therefore smells like the rest.

Ba is back!!!! Ba is back!!!!! One very happy little boy - just before his birthday too. He's been so sad, talking about Ba every day. Thanks everyone for your kind messages. I don't think I'll let him out of the house again (Ba, not son). We got back from our trip to Uk, and today returned to the scene of the crime. I didn't mention it just in case & went to the lost property & there he was - must have been returned while we were away.

Other son is also delighted Ba is back & they've both been so happy all day. It was especially great, because they were being so awful this morning - they always find it very difficult to leave the family again - only see them about 4 times a year, so they were sad & tetchy & tearful this am. I nearly didn't even take them, they were being so bad, so the find totally transformed our day. And like I said - just in time for ds's b'day next week. We're all very happy.

btw, I also tried to avoid too much of an attachment, and other ds doesn't feel especially close to one thing inparticular, and this ds didn't either - it developed more in toddlerhood, and who can stop a wilful toddler?

with baby number 3, esp after this, thought "I'll get 2 or 3" of 'it' - but who's to know what the 'it' will be? Can't get 2 or 3 of every cuddly toy they get given.

Mog - same here! Every time I see this thread appear I have to check. It's so sad

DH and I both went through tragic losses when we were little so we have purposely swapped DS's toys around in his cot and never made a big deal about any one of them. So far it's paid off (fingers crossed) as DS isn't bothered about anything apart from his thumb and that isn't going anywhere!

Monkey - surely some kind Swiss person has responded to your posters?

codswallop · 07/08/2003 21:26

we lost a small leopard..

New thread reqd please!

Tissy · 07/08/2003 21:19

monkey.... I think I might have found one....matches your description, except it doesn't have a tail....I have a photo, please get in touch with me via mumsnet so I can mail the photo to you!

Everyone, fingers crossed!

Mog · 07/08/2003 21:19

Haven't got a request but I have to keep checking this thread to see if Ba has been found. How sad am I!

kayleigh · 07/08/2003 14:16

Hope you don't mind if I join in with a request too. My ds1 now 5 has had a small blue bear since he was born. He loves it and has to have "Blue Bear" to go to sleep. As with some of your "friends" he has become incredibly worn and one more wash will probably be his last
He came from Gymboree (you had to spend over £x and you got him free.) My friend who bought my ds1 some clothing when he was born got him (summer 1998)and he is light blue with a white ribbon around his neck with "Gymboree" on it. I contacted Gymboree about a year after we got it and they were very kind but explained that any free offer toys were given to hospitals once the offer ended so they didn't keep any.
Like others we have tried similar looking bears, but ds1 will have none of it.
Is there any chance anyone has one that they wouldn't miss too much?

BearintheBigBlueHous · 07/08/2003 12:59

Sammac - am so pleased it's the same Ellie - hope your ds gets many more months out of her. Don't worry about sending us anything, thanks. When washing Ellie and packing her for transit, I told dd that she was going away on a trip up to her mummy's (dd's that is) homeland to cheer up a little boy whose Ellie wasn't very well. She nodded a lot and enjoyed helping - so Ellie's not missed and dd got a useful learning experience out of it.

Mo2 · 06/08/2003 13:49

Given the successful Ellie replacement, and hope for a new Ba, thought I'd give my similar dilemma an airing here too....

My 3 yr old has had a favourite 'duck' from whom he won't be parted since he was about 18 months - and that's fine, except 1) he's been washed so many times I think he'll disintegrate soon, and 2) I'm paranoid when we're out that we'll come home to find we've lost him (we've had a few near misses!)
Has anyone seen/ got a spare out there that they don't need? Can we add him to the charity shop/car boot sale search? (I'll offer a reward!!)

It's a little yellow duck soft toy with a squeaker inside and blue and white striped undersides to his wings - orginally came as part of a Debenhams 'Babble Boom' toy and navy cordouroy bootee set (bought in Dec 1999). The ty 'quackers' toy is similar, but not similar enough (tried that!). help... is there another one out there anywhere?

Tissy · 06/08/2003 12:55

monkey, hope you don't mind, but I have posted a request for an Ikea monkey on another board, just in case one of them has a spare knocking about! If I get any replies I'll mail you through Mumsnet!

sammac · 06/08/2003 12:14

Good news
It is the exact same Ellie. She arrived this morning and I left on on the floor waiting for ds to notice. He already had Ellie in his mouth ( which is why she's smelly!)and he ran over and shouted out ELLIE. So now has been alternatng between the two. Just gone up for a nap and old Ellie( who managed a quick trip to the washing machine) did win the cuddle contest. I think new Ellie just needs to be aclimatised.
Many thanks Bear- please let me send you something for your kindness- you've made a young boy very happy!!
Perhaps monkey might have the same luck - I'll keep my eyes open for a replacement

SoupDragon · 03/08/2003 16:43

I like the idea of postcards from Ba!!

sammac · 01/08/2003 21:10

Bearinthebigbluehous
I've emailed you with details.
Sounds like the same Ellie, label is well worn off through washing and cuddles, so can't check exactly.
You are a star!!

Paula71 · 01/08/2003 20:44

Have you thought of getting a friend from abroad to send your ds postcards from his Ba until a replacement is found?

Along the lines of "missing you terribly but having a great adventure."

I am sure people on here would do this for you (I'd send one from Edinburgh if it helps!)

BearintheBigBlueHous · 31/07/2003 22:35

Excellent - lets double-check Ellie's stats first to make sure she fits the bill exactly - about 30cm head to toe, grey head, ears (pink inside) and trunk (obviously); sky blue top; china blue trousers; no mouth and goes by the weird Ikea name STOY. She's taking a spin in the washing machine tomorrow and will be parcelled up ready to send as soon as she's dry.

I've sent tech a request to let you have our email address - if you email your details when you get it, I'll get Ellie posted off.
