Early Years Foundation Stage-Confused!!

Hello,

My daughter is 3.5 and goes to nursery 3 days a week. We have an app and they update it with photos and observations. All of her observations when she was a toddler were always exceeded but for the last year, except for one, they are all classed as emerging. Does this mean that she is below where she needs to be development wise and should I worry? I’m confused as the write up for the observation is always so positive and then next to it, it says emerging.

Some people wrongly use Development matters to create a hierarchical progression structure and allocate emerging, expected and exceeding to the age bands. This is meaningless and not part of EYFS

Yes, this is exactly what our pre-school does. Thank you for confirming it is meaningless. I’m very glad to hear it’s use in this way is being phased out. Not before time.

My DS has been at “16 months” development under the EYFS in numerous areas since he was 12 months old and he starts reception next year. We were so concerned we got his IQ assessed - it is stellar. Significantly higher than either mine or my husband’s - neither of whom are strangers to academia or professional careers. So this fabulous system that we must respect and never criticize missed a genius-level IQ and marked out a ND kid as “failing”. No adequate explanation from the preschool who clearly do not even understand it themselves.

Which is why I maintain EYFS is utterly mendacious bollocks.

Having a high IQ dosent mean you can function in all areas like socially often children with ASD have very high IQ'S but need support in understanding emotions, empathy and social interactions. Similarly a child with poor gross or fine motor skills can have a high IQ
