What do you pay for electric?

First time poster here.
So I recently got a very large Electric bill for our new house.
It is significantly bigger than our old house, but still I’m flabbergasted.
I’m curious what does everyone else spend each month on electric and how conservative are you being with it?
I think changing suppliers is the first thing I’ll do, after now turning off the emersion heater when I’m not using it (whoops).

£110 a month in summer and approx £160/170 in winter. 3/4 in house. Downstairs lights on when dark but only landing plus whatever room in use upstairs. Occasional tumble dryer use. Airfryer rather than oven. Average one wash a day on 40 min short wash

Wolmando · 28/01/2026 22:38

Electric is about £100 a month, 2 people, average size 3 bed house. Your high bill will likely be the immersion heater if it has been on constantly

hattie43 · 28/01/2026 22:40

About £300pm in winter and £120 in summer . All electric though . I don’t skimp on heating as can’t stand being cold so have it on as and when needed .

99pwithaflake · 28/01/2026 23:02

About £60 a month. Two bed terrace - both out at work all day, but we don’t skimp when we’re home in the slightest.

Make sure your lighting is low energy, to start with. Check moneysavibgexpert for cheapest supplier for your circumstances.

kelsaecobbles · 28/01/2026 23:13

£45 a month average but we have an ev

You need to be checking your consumption (usage rather than cost).
Do you have a smart meter? If so, use the display to tell your consumption and if there are things running in the background that can be turned off.
Did you check the meter readings when you moved in and is the bill based on readings or an estimate?

Just for comparison (although of little use), our monthly winter EL bill is around £60 (Inc SC) which includes dishwasher, tumble, dehumidifier etc. Our winter gas usage is usually around the same (give or take). Our highest ever combined usage (last winter) was £130/M.

Modern 4-bed det with two of us here all day and no, we don't sit here shivering!

What help is knowing how much other people spend? It's utterly meaningless to you

Just get on the cheapest tariff and don't go mad with your usage and you'll keep your ££ to a minimum

Hihibye · 29/01/2026 22:44

£143 a month for gas and elec at the moment. Edf, 2 bed very old terrace not well insulated.

dementedpixie · 29/01/2026 22:49

Your price per kwh is what you need to look at followed by how much you are using.

addictedtotheflats · 29/01/2026 22:54

£130 a month all year round. Heating on most days for 8 hours from October-March. 2 bed terrace 2 adults 2 children

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 29/01/2026 22:55

You need to ask.about daily charge and kwh charge ... anything else is irrelevant. Octopus are great!

I am finding it very interesting- I am on £50-60 a month for a 4 bed with 4 people and two posts below there is the same set up but spending £200 a month…. That’s such a difference and surely not just price kWh … but very different life styles

Girlintheframe · 30/01/2026 07:33

£106 per month for gas and electricity. 4 bed terraced house. 3 adults - 1 works PT so home a good bit. We do however have a wood burner which we use daily in winter.

dementedpixie · 30/01/2026 07:48

Our electricity cost for last month was about £200. (Gas was £80) We are in a 4 bed house in scotland, 2 adults and 2 older teens. We charge an electric car.

I swapped to Home Energy a couple of months ago as their gas and electricity charges were a bit lower than Octopus who I had been with for a few years

Beachtastic · 30/01/2026 09:45

£85/month, modern 2-bed bungalow, GCH, two of us WFH all day.
