Child benefit self assessment

Wondering if anyone can help or has been in this position. My DH will call HMRC but they are closed now . We clam child benefit and he has been asked to complete self assessment which he has done. His salary for tax year 2024-205 was £62800 and he made £2000 of pensions payments but has been asked to pay back £1864

how is this possible? It just doesn’t make sense surely it should be £150 at most not more than the child benefit we received

Hmm that sounds weird if the only reason to pay them in child benefit.

Is there also untaxed savings income or anything else that is being taxed in the self assessment at the same time?

Sorry, no other ideas.

The website provides the calculation.

No nothing - the calculations say we owe £13 - we don’t have enough savings to be taxed on them! I just can’t work it out and it takes so bloody long to get through to HMRC

That’s not right. I earn 68k and I repaid £280 (4.5k pension deducted). One child now.

I’m hoping we can get hold of them today to sort it
