Zoomchat with Helen Joyce on her new book

JuliaMumsnet · 20/07/2021 12:24

Hello

We’re delighted to announce a Mumsnet Zoomchat with senior staff journalist at The Economist Helen Joyce about her new book 'Trans'.

To quote the book jacket: "Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just ten years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex."

"People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining ‘man’ and ‘woman’. While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies, particularly with regard to women’s rights, fairness in sport, same sex attraction and children’s development."

Helen will be chatting with Mumsnet HQ and answering your questions on Tuesday 27 July at 8pm, and you can book your place now by registering here.

Please note We can only take questions from Zoomchat attendees on the night - please don’t ask questions in advance as we can’t promise we’ll be able to put them forwards.

Thanks
MNHQ

@BingBongSong

Is this why I've just had an email saying my registration has been cancelled?

I should think so - but you can re-register using your MN address. (I had to do this.)

Does anyone know how to zoom anonymously? I've found a slider in the settings that says show name when participants join. Is that all I have to do?

Thank you very much!

Yes - you do have to reregister with your Mumsnet-associated email address. Or let us know if there is a reason you can't do that.

@GCrebel In the webinar itself, attendees cannot see each other's names, unless they ask a question in the Q&A box, though you have the option of selecting 'ask anonymously' when you do that, or ask a question live (which obviously there is no pressure to do!)

Hope that helps

Why has my registration been cancelled?

Report

Oh I had to re-register. Hope it lets me as I usually use professional email on zoom.

Yes. Thank you I did get the reminder. My Mumsnet email inbox is full. I'm frantically deleting stuff but it won't let me send any emails so I don't know if I can re-register with it anyway.

Bloody hell MN, I thought you generally tried to stay at least neutral

Report
Enough4me · 27/07/2021 21:12

Thank you Helen and Justine, I would love to know how many attended in solidarity.

I also assume there were horrible messages and hope you enjoy the gin and forget this part!

Report
HereticFanjo · 27/07/2021 21:16

@FelicityBeedle The point that Helen made in the talk is that it is virtually impossible to be neutral on this issue. Too much is at stake. It's essentially reality vs fantasy / entitlement and women are the losers here.
