To ask what is the strangest/creepiest thing that has ever happened to you?

I have two strange/creepy unexplained events that stick in my head.

The first happened when I was teenager, my DF ran his business from our family home and we had a phone/fax machine in the living room. Whenever we picked up the phone we could always hear a radio station playing very distantly on the other end. I'll never forget the time I picked up the phone to ring a friend and could hear Penny Lane playing!

The other is slightly more sinister. My DM and I were at home alone one evening, it was summer and still warm and I had the bedroom window open. I can remember hearing a loud crash in the garden, thought maybe the cat had knocked something over and thought little of it. Then my mum suddenly popped her head around the door told me that she was going to bed and that she'd "locked all of the doors". Thought it was an odd thing to say, but thought little of it. That night I was kept awake by the next door neighbours security light going on and off, and when I got up the next morning my DM pointed out that the garden ornaments and solar lights from next to the fence had been smashed.

That's when she told me that she to and heard the crashing sound the night before, and got up to investigate and when she looked through the kitchen window she was convinced she could see a person peering through the window, as as if they were standing next to it with their back against the wall and peeing in from the side, but wasn't sure if she was seeing things or not! She was scared enough to lock all of the doors, but not to ring he police it seems! Still freaks me out now! I'm sure someone was in our garden for whatever reason!

Years ago was in my room and red spots appeared on the wall. At first they didn't move, and slowly started
Moving. Legged it from there. Never worked it out. And no wasnt from outside. Had happened previously so I painted the glass in the windows.

Few years later, different place. I started having this feeling of being
Pushed down when I was
Sleeping. I would wake up in terror, unable to breathe,
And something pushing down on my chest. Everything had been freshly decorated before moving in. But one night during these chest
Pushes a single, large hand print appeared on the ceiling above my head. This carried on for a few weeks. When early on morning I was In the living room, and a guy appeared. It was really weird and peaceful. I should have been shitting myself but wasn't. I could sense his
Pain. He stood, arms folded, watching me for a few minutes and disappeared. Never had anything push my chest again. As time went on started to get to know some of the locals. One showed me a picture. It was the guy
Who had appeared. Before we moved in he had been violently murdered in the flat.

Moved in here when the dc's where very small. They where able to tell me every about the
Previous occupant. He
Would also lets me know he is still around - hear him walking around - smell his aftershave - his cigarettes - when I cannot find something I ask him if he's seen it and to leave it on the side. He's not let me down yet.

There's loads. Like the time I was a kid and walked into the living room nd my grandfather was sitting in his favourite chair. He had just popped by to say bye. He does not long after in his hospital bed miles away.

Although wonders if there was more than one screaming Susan tree in west London. Lived there back in the 80's and was told about the tree. Used hate walking past it.

My ex was an abusive twat. When still together he promised that if he ever died he would visit me and to let me know he would alter the clocks in my house by setting them five or ten minutes fast.
He died ten years ago after a very acrimonious divorce. Since then, every single clock, watch or electric item in my house has broken. Clocks have flown off walls and smashed. Watches just stop. Ornamental clocks have flown off mantelpieces and windowsills and smashed. I have been through twenty odd clocks since then and each and every one has broken. Electric clocks just malfunction. Alarms don't work and sometimes go off at bizarre times in the middle of the night.
Creepy.

Nancy that reminds me of when I was at university and the day before my French prose translation finals the word "parrot" suddenly came into my head. I went back to my room and looked it up in the dictionary (= "le perroquet"). The next day, guess what the text was we had to translate from English to French? An extract from Flaubert's Parrot by Julian Barnes (which included the word parrot so I did need that translation)!!!

I had a best friend at school who's birthday was Nov 16th but every year without fail I'd give her a card and present on Oct 23rd convinced it was her birthday then. It turned into a running joke after the initial hurt of me not knowing when her birthday was. I would have stand up arguments that I was right! I finally got it right when I was 29.

When I was 30 I had my first baby. Two weeks early and a 3 day labour. He was born on Oct 23rd.

I was on a train late on a Sunday night traveling home after visiting family for the weekend. Whenever my dh nd I travelled by train we usually just sat on the floor of the vestibule. As usual I was sitting on the floor, under the window, reading.
I decided to get up nd stretch my legs nd no sooner had I stepped away from the window it came smashing inward, glass everywhere.

I have three weird tales, all from the same location, which was a golf club I used to work at.

The layout of the club was thus: on the ground floor was the bar and restaurant with a long corridor running the length of the building joining it to the rest of the clubhouse. Directly above the bar, restaurant and corridor was a function suite. There was no way to secure the function suite so when it was set up for a wedding, we had to listen for footsteps and then go up to investigate (you can probably guess where this is going). So one day I followed these heavy footsteps. They were directly above me all the way to the final set of doors at the bottom of the stairs. When I reached the bottom of the stairs (the only exit from the upstairs) there was no one there. I met another member of staff at the bottom of the stairs and they said they had not seen anyone.

A few months later, my dad was coming to pick my sister up (who also worked there) at locking up time and with those people who were locking the exit door in sight (i.e. the building had to be empty), my dad saw a grey figure in the window of the function suite upstairs. My dad does not believe in anything like this but is adamant about what he saw.

My final story is the weirdest. On Christmas eve, I locked early afternoon, checking all the doors. The alarm was very sensitive and would not set unless all doors were properly locked. At 11.30pm on Christmas eve I get a call, as key holder, to attend the alarm going off. When I get there, a push-handle fire door (which I know was shut) was wide open. I feared a break in but nothing was disturbed. However, as I proceeded through the three sets of double doors to the bottom of the function suite stairs, my father and I were hit by the strongest smell of woodsmoke. To this day was cannot explain the door being open or the distinctive smell of woodsmoke.

I was walking home one afternoon when I was 17. there was a parked car and as I walked past the man inside called to me, asking my name where I was going get in and he will take me home etc etc. I continued walking and he crept alongside me in the car along the road trying to persuade me to get in until I got to a raised area of pavement where he could no longer do so, he then drove off. around 2 weeks later walked into my local shop and there was a huge picture of that man alongside the word 'manhunt' on the front of the local paper, 2weeks after id come across him armed with a hammer he'd kidnapped a 15 year old girl from the street into his car, locked her in his flat and repeatedly raped her.

When I used to live in Edinburgh I worked in a shop on the Royal Mile. There were several layers of basement rooms underneath the shop which were used as stock rooms. My manager sent me down to get some stock from basement no 2 which was one floor down from the stock room we used must often. All very normal, strip lighting cheesy bagpipe music playing, am a v practical person and totally not a believer in woo.

I got down to the basement, started getting the items we needed and suddenly felt this very, very strong sense of anger and a voice in my head telling me to get out NOW. I legged it up the stairs as fast as possible, having dropped everything I came for and must have been white as a sheet because my manager took me to her office and asked me what had happened.

I was new in the job and new in town so was v embarrassed at sounding like such a crazy lady, but I told her. She said, it is OK, that basement is on the same level as the old alleys where they walled people with the plague in to die. Apparently, they had sent me down because none of the longer serving staff would go there as they had all had the same experience. The only person who would willingly go was the caretaker, who was a devout Catholic, and prayed all the way down the stairs and back again for their 'unquiet souls'Shock

Had a glass topped dining table, rarely used and set against the wall in our living/dining room behind our sofa, with the doors to our conservatory just behind.
One warm evening, watching cbeebies bedtime hour with the dc and heard an almighty smash! I though someone had stood in the conservatory and thrown a brick through the french doors. Sent the dc from the room into the hall, and crept toward the diner end of the room. As I stepped past the sofa, shattered glass all over the floor, I realised it was the glass from the dining table.
We never did work out why it simply exploded, but the thought still makes me shiver!

Its where titanic set off from and alot if the buildings at the front the passages were staying in before departing. I loved the sense of history. Ive never forgotten those eyes and knowing he was there but as i said i felt no fear.

When I was 21, I moved back in with my mum after splitting up with an ex. I stayed in the spare bedroom which had a shelf at the bottom of my bed where I put my CD player. The player came with a remote which I kept on the bedside table. The CD player was always plugged in but turned off by remote as it displayed the time and was always fixed to aux because i would plug in my mp3 player.

One night, at 1:20 I woke up to it absolutely blaring the radio at full volume. It woke me with a start scared the shit out of me and I reached for the remote to turn it off. It did this for a few nights over a week or 2, always at the same time, which no one else in the house ever heard. Which was odd because it was so fucking loud and we all slept on the same floor. Then one night it did it at 1:20, 2:20, 3:20 and 4:20. By the time it went off at 3:20, I was seriously shitting myself. After it did it again at 4:20, I finally pulled the damn socket out.

Even that night, no one else heard it. And it never happened again.

when I was 9, in the early eighties, I was standing outside our house batting a ball against the wall. It was one of those perfect days, weather beautiful, had a fantastic day in the swimming pool with friends. I vividly remember closing my eyes tightly and saying "remember how this feels, remember this day, remember how happy you are.
are" and then a car horn beeped, I looked over at this woman who was just staring. I ran back into the house, freaked out.

So, about three years ago, when I was 39, we were driving to see an old school friend. Dh had never seen the house we grew up in, so we did a mini diversion to drive past my old family home. We drove to the ove to the top of the hill and took a couple of photos from the car. I saw a little girl, about the same age as my youngest at the time, 9, playing ball on the side.of.the road.

Done most of my stories on the Halloween thread but a story here reminded me of one I haven't shared...

I was a student in the early 1980s. And after leaving university, myself and everyone I knew was unemployed (Thatcher) so we stayed living together in a big student house which in itself was quite creepy. Every now and then we'd throw student parties even though only some of us were still students. All our old mates from far and wide would come.

We decided to throw a party on the last Friday of Michaelmas term as everyone was going home on the Saturday.

One of our friends, 'John', was doing a Masters degree and had moved away. He was living back at home with his parents in London. He was the only one of us with a car and before the party started, the very straight-laced John took a few of us to the pub. It was only a week or two after the law had been changed introducing seat belts as compulsory. So most of us didn't bother fastening seat belts as a rule. It was long before drink driving became a no-no and in fact loads of people drank and drove but John being very prim and proper, was on orange juice all night. As we piled in the car to go to the pub he went mad with us as we hadn't done up our seat-belts, and refused to drive off until we'd all done them up. Loads of piss-taking and 'Yes dad' followed but we did as he told us.

He drove us back to the party and I chatted with him on and off all night - he refused to drink anything alcoholic because he might be driving back to London, later. It was a long drive from there and it was a Friday night so I tried to dissuade him and get him to crash at our's. It was a huge house with loads of room.

As the night went on something weird happened. First my watch I'd had for years that was reliable, just died. Then two silver rings I'd worn every day of my life since I was at high school snapped, unaccountably. It freaked me out a bit.

Around 2am, the party was winding up and I was still chatting to John. He wanted to drive back to London. I tried to persuade him to stay with us but he refused. He was stone cold sober and wanted to drive home in the night. We were all dispersing back to our parents' for xmas the following morning. I had one last attempt to get him to sleep on one of the sofas and he refused. I was the last person to speak to him.

He drove back to London and a few hundred yards from his house, his car skidded on a patch of ice and hit a lamp-post. He died instantly. Whip-lash because he'd been wearing his seat belt. He was going so slowly if he'd not been wearing the seat belt he'd probably have survived.

Since that night I have rarely worn a watch. It freaks me out too much.

posted too soon....so the girl walked back to the house and started batting a ball against the wall. And I got this weird deja vu, the belted navy coat, the clumpy pants, the shoes. She looked exactly like I did. And then I just had the realisation that she was me. I then dismissed the idea as ridiculous and told dh. He laughed and told me to get out and have a closer look. But I just knew I couldn't talk to her. I stared for a bit then drove off. Very weird experience.

I had a really horrible nights sleep and was restless. I kept
having a dream that my bf's(now husband) mum had passed away then my phone started ringing and it was him to say she had passed away in the night...I knew as soon as saw my phone ringing that that was what he was calling about.

Small disclaimer she was quite ill at the time so not that creepy but had never had that dream before

A certain farm near here was in my family for decades. My mum was born there. It has a long, long drive lined with poplars that comes out onto a B road. That stretch of road is between two villages - and mum's old farm is one field's length away from one village and 5 miles from the village where I grew up. A stream runs the whole length of that 5 mile road, alongside the road and because of that and because it is sea level, you get a lot of fog and mist and it is generally quite a creepy road to drive along at night.

14 years ago I lived back in my birth village and my (vile) ex rented a cottage in the next village - the one near mum's old farm. So I'd often drive that road at night.

I drove it hundreds of times and was driven along it once or twice a week as a child but I only saw this once...

One time, a barn owl (the white ones) was sitting bang in the middle of the road. It was very foggy so I was driving slowly, and as I approached it, was surprised that it didn't fly away but stared right at me and sort of held me in its glare til I was really close, then it flew off at the last minute. Never seen an owl just on the road like that - you see them flying most usually; more rarely, sitting on a hedge top or in a tree looking for prey. The other thing was - it stood on a bend in the road right next to our old farm's drive. Of all the places along the road to see it - bang opposite mum's farm. That is a low point in the road and often where you get the thickest fog.

I have a friend who was born in a romany family and it intrigued me so much this owl staring at me, I asked her if it meant anything. She said it was trying to warn me. Something. She didn't know what. But be careful. My mum has been dead over forty years - died when I was a kid - but loved the barn owls - we'd often sit on the back door step and listen out for them screeching in the summer, when I was a child. It is one of my few memories of her.

A week to the day later I had drive in the evening to vile ex's house but had an almighty row with him, and was about to leave so I sat in the lane behind his house but I was so shaken that I felt I couldn't drive off. I had this unaccountable feeling that rather than drive home I should... wait. So I sat in the car, maybe half an hour. As I did, I heard sirens go past and when I eventually set off down the B road, there was a police blockade before the bend in the road by our farm, and a man driving back the other way told me there'd been a car crash. At that exact spot I'd seen the owl. A man was killed. The following week, flowers appeared on the verge by the stream, a few yards from where I'd seen the owl. The man had been on the opposite side to the road I would have been but had veered across onto 'my' side then upturned in the stream. If I'd driven back when I left the ex's house, he could easily have crashed into me as it was about the time I was leaving that it happened.

Almost the worst part of it was knowing y ex would have told everyone I'd had a 'tantrum' and driven off in a huff and my kids might have grown up thinking I'd killed that man.

I had a doll that, when you take the dummy out it released a pin from the back of the mouth to trigger it crying.

I grew out of it and hadn't played with for a long time and it was just sitting in the corner of my room with the dummy in.

Anyway when I was about 9 I went to bed as usual and in the middle of the night, whole family asleep, it suddenly started crying. I switched the light on, heard my mum trundle out her room, past my door (my little brother was new born, she thought it was him crying) and saw the doll sat there with no dummy in its mouth. I panicked needing this bloody thing to be quiet so grabbed a pencil and stuck it in its mouth to press the pin down to stop it crying.

Waking up to a doll with a pencil sticking out its mouth was fucking freaky.

And I never ever found that dummy.

What the crap happened there? So weird.
