Are you claiming UC as a single mum on £30,000 per year?

I've just done two benefit calculators (turn2us and entitled to) and it says that once I have divorced and I am living on my own with my 2 children, earning 30,000 per year, self employed I'd be able to claim £203.29 per week UC.

I just don't know if I can trust this. It seems like way too much. I didn't think I'd even be able to claim anything on my salary.

If you do this please let me know.

I don't understand how ppl get that much support? I only get £500 plus £256 baby element and I only earn 15k. That 500 is my rent element but obviously don't cover rent nd bills?? I have 1 baby.

Do you have childcare costs?

I do. I earn a little more in fact. Claiming for 3 dc, all born before deadline but youngest are twins so wouldn’t matter. I have a mortgage so get a higher work allowance. I get about £600 UC a month. It changes as I have two jobs one weekly pay, one monthly so wages fluctuate a bit. If I have childcare costs it goes up a bit. I actually pay more in tax/ni every month so don’t feel too bad about claiming and it won’t be forever. Most western countries give parents some sort of tax break/ tax allowance. I think the uk is alone in having this fun convoluted system.

I work mainly for my LA so in order to fund decent wage rises council tax would need to go up so it does feel a bit swings and roundabouts or the tax payer.

I would say once set up it’s actually very straightforward. I’m in the “light touch” group. They email every once in a while and I sign on to online account to agree commitments, which are inform of changes and that I’ve read about sanctions. Then they pay monthly. HMRC tells them what I earn. There are no face to face or telephone appointments to contend with as you aren’t expected to look for work.

Probably! Run it through an online calculator like entitled to but an easy way to work it out is multiply your take home by .55 ( the taper rate) which is 1188 then take away your work allowance. This (depending on any other changes in circumstances) is the amount your UC will be reduced by every month.
