Low-carb diets

Share advice and experiences of following a low-carb diet.Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Is cold turkey the only option?

I'm really wanting to change over to a low carb way of eating - I've done lots of reading (the easy bit!) and am totally convinced by the health benefits of this way of eating, but in the past I've struggled to get going properly, previously never lasting longer than a couple of days Blush. At the moment my diet is VERY carb heavy, and I love them, I just know they're no good for me.

Instead of launching from total carb-fest to low carb, has anyone had success at a gradual move away from carbs - or is this impossible with their addictive loveliness?? In the past when I've attempted low carb I've actually felt depressed and given up as it's felt just too damned hard, and am hoping that a more gentle approach might help me get through this part better. Or am I kidding myself and the only possible way to adapt to this way of eating is to grit my teeth and cold turkey my way through it?

I'm a real cheapskate and can't justify having meat every meal so I go a bit egg mad. One for breakfast scrambled with fruit, one or two for lunch as an omelette with cheese, fried or just boiled and sometimes one with tea as well if I am having bacon or sausages. As said above in another post, homemade sausages are cheaper than the posh ones and quite quick to make. I don't bother with skins just mash the meat up with onion and herbs, shape and fry.

I am spending more on food but then I know I'm eating more healthily and I feel so much better for it so I don't really mind, especially since I spend almost nothing on myself otherwise. I've found the kids are eating much healthier as well - they are getting their 5 a day most days whereas before it was 2/3. I haven't even pushed it with them either they've just naturally asked to try what I'm eating and liked it so asked for some next time.

On the health note there are savings to be made there too, for instance fewer trips to the dentist/ hygienist for me; my gums are much less inflamed.

A cheeky tip is to look out for money off 'first spend offers' on hot deals uk and work your way through the supermarket online deliveries; then get someone else in your house to do the same! Buy basics for things like washing up liquid, veg that you wont be buying local or organic etc but spend more on meat.

The other thing, Blush sorry I can't help myself multi-posting, is what about doing 1 or 2 weeks very strict low carb or paleo to help with cravings and get a decent bit of weightloss but then to look into carb-cycling where you introduce a daily meal or 2 full days a week where can have carbier. more affordable healthy foods like porridge, rice or potatoes.

I was 193lbs on saturday.

Today I am 185 lbs.

I realise the weightloss is not always going to be like this but damn, it feels good! SmileSmileSmileSmile
