Issue in relation to grandparents’ estate - possible compensation

I’ve received a letter from a solicitor acting on behalf of a bank, in relation to the estates of my grandparents, who died almost 20 years ago.

The letter says that ‘a potential issue may have arisen’ in relation to their estates, ‘that may result in compensation becoming payable’.

They died within a week of each other, intestate. I am estranged from my father (their son) due to domestic violence - he lived with them, and I hadn’t seen them for almost ten years before they died.

I don’t know how these solicitors got my married name or address. My father doesn’t know these details, so it can’t be him that passed that information on to the solicitors.

The bank they’re acting for is the same as my bank.

I’ve needed to confirm my grandparents’ address and my date of birth in order for the solicitor to discuss any further with me. But I got an automated message that they’re out of the office till Tuesday, and I’m going mad wondering what this is all about, what the potential issue is, how they tracked me down etc!

Anyone have any experience of this sort of situation? I’m wondering about the term ‘compensation’ in relation to the mysterious issue with their estates. If there’s a bank account with money in it, wouldn’t that be distributed to my father as next of kin? Unless he’s also died…But they died almost 20 years ago, would their assets have been dealt with by now?

All so curious!

I used to work for a bank. The inspectors were quite something to behold, and their occasional unscheduled arrival engendered fear in us all. Sometimes organisations are obliged to do the right thing because the error has been gleefully uncovered in an audit by people whose job it is to find errors made by staff.

That’s my point, the person/people who picked up the error had integrity and are likely to be fair.

How wonderful to have an unexpected windfall.
Hope it's a 6 figure sum !

I too was heir hunted. A solicitor in Wales got in touch with me. This was about 10 years ago. My Aunt remembered being told the story.
What happened was my Great grandfather had bought a house for his daughter as her husband, home from WW1, had PTSD and was very unstable. He later committed suicide by drowning in the river near Abergavenny. So his widow lived in the house with her daughter, then the daughter's daughter lived there, then the son...So son and his wife wanted to sell the house and discovered that it was owned by GG, who had long passed away. Using the firm on TV the solicitor tracked down the heirs and we each passed on any info we knew about our family.
In the end we all got £1400 !
But best of all we got paper work with info and names of our relatives dating from 1895. Such a sad story though.
It was Fascinating stuff.

For anyone interested in an update - after 7 months and close to £20k in lawyers bills…we’re ending up with a compensation payout of £180k! There’s been quite a few twists and turns, very relieved to have reached a resolution!

I was contacted by one of those sorts of companies. It turned out that my great aunt had died in Australia three years ago and they'd proceeded in distributing her assets based on my dad (named in the will) being dead but they then found that my father had actually died two months after her, so there was a big shufty to get everything sorted. It didn't impact me because my father's will left everything to my mother but I know she got a wodge.

Wow ! Fabulous news 😀 Thanks for the update . Have fun spending it.

Sorry, just saw date on this. Good update!

Harassedevictee · 08/05/2026 22:40

@IWonderWhatItCouldBe thanks for the update. Glad you finally got it sorted.

Goodness, that’s amazing. I’m so pleased for you.

What an amazing outcome. I’m so pleased for you. Enjoy it!

MouseAttack · 08/05/2026 23:19

That’s incredible. So pleased for you. How on earth did they loose your grandparents’ wills for 20 years? Did the bank pay the £20k lawyers fees if it was their fault?

IWonderWhatItCouldBe · 08/05/2026 23:31

The wills were found in the bank’s safe holdings. They’re offering £12k towards the lawyers fees, so not the whole amount, but I’m splitting the bill with my sister so it’s still pretty decent outcome!

That’s incredible news! I hope you have some nice plans once your share is in your bank account!!

MouseAttack · 09/05/2026 00:00

So weird! A nice windfall for you and your sister! Sounds as though there was a lot a twists and turns over the last few months. Must have been very stressful for you and your sister.

What did your dad say about it all?

Lennonjingles · 09/05/2026 07:14

Good update, did you find anything out regarding your Father.

IWonderWhatItCouldBe · 09/05/2026 08:25

Haven’t been in touch with my father. I hadn’t seen / spoken to him in almost 20 years before this. The bank chose not to pursue him (considering it plausible he didn’t know there were wills). He still lives in my grandparents’ house, according to what I could find online.
