Train companies blaming each other

In November I bought a ticket from train line which involved 2 legs. A to B with LNER and B to C with GWR.
The LNER train was delayed so I had to catch a later GWR train. Half way along the second journey the train terminated due to flooding and there were no further services out of the station that night. The information desk was closed, so I had to book a hotel. The following day all trains were cancelled again and I had to book a further night, there wete no buses running either because of the weather/flooding. Altogether I incurred about £200 costs.
GWR have said that LNER are liable for these consequential costs because their train was delayed. LNER say GWR are responsible because they have a duty of care.
I have sent them both a letter before action. If they don't settle and I have to go to court, is it possible to bring one case against them both and let the judge decide. But if he decides one train company is liable, will I have to pay the other train company's costs?

Yes, it is possible for you to bring one case against both of them and for the judge to decide how much each of them is liable. This will be a small claim so, even if the judge decides that one of the companies is not liable, you will not have to pay their costs.

LNER for delay repay. GWR for costs due to you being stranded.
