I am very concerned about the private sector or public sector where these people may be being taken on regularly instead of paying people the proper wage and employing them (with consequent rights for example to sick pay and holiday pay). However there are cases (like Hagothehills mentioned when it can lead to employment).
I have volunteered myself and I know people who the job centre suggested volunteer as part of job search. Also a few young people who found volunteering roles with charities during or towards the end of studies and while job hunting. When the courses finished and they had to claim benefit some were allowed to continue the volunteering and for it count towards some of their job search activity. A lot are in paid employment and the reference from the charity/experience on CV went a small way to help with that

Helena I guess I was thinking more in terms of the ethics of public money going more or less directly to the shareholders private sector companies, allowing those companies to employ fewer people, thereby creating more unemployment, more people in need of benefits, etc. If a charity can be helped out, and can in turn provide some helpful experience for someone looking for a job, that seems like a more ethical use of public money.

The sanctions issue seems more to do with how workfare is structured. I agree that the quickness to sanction people is a huge problem with the current benefits system. But I suppose I would me more likely to trust a homeless charity to be responsible to its workers than I would a private sector company.

I "work" two mornings a week in a charity shop. I don't get paid. I am a volunteer. Everyone else in the shop - bar the manager - is a volunteer too. We get people who want to help the charity for all different reasons, some of them probably are trying to get work experience to put on their CV. Some may be sent by the Job Centre. Unless of course you are going down the road of saying that voluntary "work", whatever your reasons is exploitation and everyone should receive minimum wage? The vast majority of organisations on the very out of date list which was posted are charitable organisations who would not pay JSA claimants to work for them. Take all of those opportunities away, and the people who want work experience have far fewer organisations to approach for work. Rather counter-productive.

I notice a couple of animal charities on there - are we sure they aren't feeding the unemployed to the animals? I know some people on here wouldn't have hesitated in saying the Tories were doing that.

Workfare isn't voluntary. I have no issues with voluntary work for charities, but actually, claimants are often prevented from doing this because they are not considered available for work.

It's the compulsory aspect of workfare, and its use by busineses to cut their wage bill, which is damaging.

They will often use their experience to gain employment elsewhere.

There is very little evidence that this is the case, and a lot of evidence that many DWP schemes are actually counterproductive.

To the people that said they dont see a problem with those having to 'volunteer' in the charity shops, at least with real volunteering you know ur income is not going to be affected whereas those on workfare will get sanctioned for any slight perceived misdemeanor

I suspect motivation may make a difference to the outcomes.

I don't see why my tax money should subsidise the likes of Tesco. Especially as I end up paying twice - once for the benefits a Workfare claimant is getting instead of wages, and again for the additional hours that other employees in the store lose, requiring more input in tax credits. Why should I want to subsidise Tescos instead of the NHS?

And frankly, the sort of "experience" they provide to many Workfare workers is utterly worthless.

How? When there are loads of them all with the same experience on their CV.

Most unemployed people are temporarily out of work: they have work experience and, left to their own devices, will get paid work.

The long term unemployed are incredibly difficult to get into work, because they often face barriers such as poor health and illiteracy - just dumping them for low quality "work experience" has little impact. Even very aggressive intervention is not very effective - see researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/SN06904/SN06904.pdf.

JSA claimants shouldn't be allowed to fester on the dole, so I approve of these placements. However - they should be paid properly!

The theory of giving people experience to apply for other employment is all very well if regular employment is available. Is it? Why would employers pay staff if people can be forced to work for free? I do think that this is a problem. The whole voluntary sector has expanded massively in recent years - much previously paid work in the public sector has been pushed into it - and it is getting increasingly difficult to get paid work without working unpaid first. It all just widens the divide between the haves and have-nots.

DD was forced to work unpaid for 8 weeks, 35 hours a week, in a sandwich bar six miles away when she finished college and was looking for work.

It took her another 6 weeks to get her transport costs reimbursed from
Jobcentre Plus after she finished there.

In London the workfare regime is still very much operational. Not sure how they're getting away with it, but schemes are getting bigger by the month.

I work with volunteers - one of my colleagues is a tiny alcoholic of over 50 who was sent to be a builder at a housing association construction site.

Thank God the foreman sent him home before he killed the team and himself. If he hadn't, the HA would have made 250 quid a day net profit forcing him to labour free and no doubt blithely denied responsibility for recruiting unreliable addicts for dangerous manual work.

My mate was then sent to clear up vandalism, another heavy and dangerous manual job, saving the council 800 quid a week. They only let him off that when he got pleurisy. Of course he had to provide medical certs to JSA.

Just one example - we're getting a new lot from the job centre this week.

It is ironic, is it not, that Theresa May's flagship announcement taking Britain back onto the world stage is about a new anti-slavery movement. Who could disagree with that - certainly not the people forced onto workfare, and presumably not those sending them there either.

Why shouldn't people work for their benefits. £70 pw for what 30 hours work is not paying the LEGALMiNIMUM* is it
10 hours at would be fair enough. 10×7=70 JSA earned. However let's not forget if people have paid their taxes then why should they have to jump through hell fire and high water to get THEIR pittance.
And all this work for benefits could put all our jobs at risk, after all why should our managers pay us to do a job, when. They can just as easily get someone courtesy of the DWP to work for them for free.

I'm fine with workfare if the work people are forced to do is paid at at least minimum wage. It is just wrong to make someone work for JSA. They're doing a job, pay them for it. Shouldn't that make everyone happy? The unemployed person is in work, they get wages so they aren't claiming out of work benefits, they are being treated fairly rather than exploited- win win situation (or it would be if minimum wage was actually enough to live on but that's a subject for amother day).
Workfare placements that people are only paid £70 a week for should only entail around 10 hours work. It's illegal to pay people less than minimum wage but because this is a government scheme suddenly it's okay?
