No threads here yet?
It looks like a very big explosion, one fatality reported so far. May be terrorism but bbc saying that is speculation.

Research is starting to show that certain types of people are finding it harder and harder to distinguish between what they see on the silver screen and real life.

When are governments going to stop hand-wringing and pretending there is no connection between what boys and men watch on the silver screen, and the way they behave as men?

I am angry that "free speech" i.e the right to show gratuitous violence and rape gets to ride roughshod over our right to keep our children safe

Oh FFS sakura, for all you know this 'man' has never watched television in his whole life.

What chills me to the core is how cold blooded and thoroughly thought out this killing was, those poor children never stood a chance :(

Since he is apparently ex-military, there may be other influences at work than the big or small screen. And as an ex-military man, they might suggest at some point that he has some kind of PTSD, depending on what active service he saw. I hope not - I hope they don't give him any kind of "cop-out" - but it's a possibility.

"exmilitary" may just mean compulsory national service, not active service iyswim. Not dismissing is as a possibility, just that it is something all the men go through.

From dh's town they had a group of 5 at the camp, 2 are missing. It's a close knit community and they are devastated. It's tough watching from the uk, but the friends in the political party are very upset.

Ah thanks seashells - I wasn't sure if Norway still had compulsory national service or not.

Hope they get good news about the missing 2 from the camp. :(

The only thing I feel about this crime is terribly, terribly sad for the victims and their families and my prayers are with them. To be honest attempting to understand this mans actions in anyway is virtually impossible. Eandz, attempting to turn the tragedy of others into something about you suggests a mental health issue at a level you want to get looked at.

There are 3 Norwegian families in my street of just 12 houses. No children out playing on their bikes like a normal Saturday. So very, very sad.

Not my DH! A loved one, rather than my lover... family member.

The ex-military thing is a red herring, it's his national service I'm sure.

It's now 92 people who have died.:(

Sorry Nerf, didn't mean to get that wrong.

Yes it says national service on the bbc website.

seashells :( Hope they get some news soon.

here is Ch 4's profile of the man - again, says national service. As more details come out, there is more clarity of the situation. But not much.

I wish the UK media would stop having a translator voicing over the person speaking. I would rather listen to the actual speaker. Subtitles would suffice.

Luring children to him with a trusted uniform then opening fire.....words just fail me.

I keep bursting into tears thinking about this. It's so awful, my heart goes out to my Norwegian friends and everyone else.

Reading this...reading the way he calculated every fucking move he made...it's like he watched every other nut with guns and bombs and learned from their "mistakes". Having the bomb go off as a distraction, dressing as a person of trust, picking off those who were wounded or pretending to be so to keep themselves safe. That's why he got such a high death toil: he left no room for error. He's a scary, ruthless man and it makes my blood boil.

I can't even add anything coherant to this thread besides my disgust and anger, really.

Those poor kids, their parents and friends. Heartbreaking. Why?

No doubt there'll be questions as to why it took the Police so long to get there. Those poor people. It must have been horrific.
Why are people like that not found out before they act in such a way? Surely his friends & family knew he was a nut case?!

"Reading this...reading the way he calculated every fucking move he made.."

His photo (as being printed everywhere) was professionally taken and obviously print quality.

He knew exactly what he was doing. Way in advance it seems.

My heart goes out to the Parents and Families of all the people killed yesterday.

It's just so horrific. It makes me so sad to think anyone could do something so terrible. I'm trying not to think about it too much, it's just so overwhelming to think about the poor, poor parents.

Why?

Report
Kladdkaka · 23/07/2011 21:25

Longbay I'm sure there will be some questions about how it was handled, there always are. But I don't think the police response time is really an issue. It's not like Britain where people are packed in like sardines and emergency services are expected to respond within minutes. It's sparsely populated with proper remote wildnerness. The nearest population centre of any substance was Oslo itself, over an hour away.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 23/07/2011 21:46

Why?.... I'm sure the gunman/bomber will have made a list somewhere of reasons why he perpetrated this crime - people to blame, grudges held, causes that inspired him etc. Truth is there is no sane reason for what happened beyond the sad fact that, every so often, a deluded psychopath gets it into his head that his best next move is to kill a load of people - and then goes & does it.

Papers now reporting that he published a 1500 pages long manifesto detailing his ideas and his plans for the bombing on the internet.

The Guardian said yesterday that he was cooperating with the police and that he was willing to talk. Of course he is.

I wish I could refuse to give him the attention he wants, but I can't turn my eyes away, the whole thing is too horrible.

Just terrible. Heart-breaking.

People in Norway, I am thinking of you. If anyone has lost a loved one, my sincere condolences to you.
